Thai Word of the Day?
Yes, this has been dormant for too long, thanks for resurrecting it. Let me think. Hope others will join in again as well.

I learnt a new word the other day (although I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet) -
'tii lang' - which means later. You can use it when you don't want to go somewhere/eat/drink or do whatever at that particular time.
Mai ow .....(whatever)... diow nii, tii lang reu ka/kap.
(Don't want...(to do whatever)...now, later OK?)
VS
Apologies for transliteration, but I spell it as I hear it

Why don't we turn this around a bit and post a word or phrase in English that the poster wants to know how to say in Thai, you know, something that you want to say and sticks in your mind but don't know how to when the situation arises. Perhaps some of us on here can give an adequate translation? Pete

I learnt this one pretty quickly on my second visit after i couldnt shift the people trying to sell me stuff, I have a good laugh with some of the flower sellers in the bar, I was Known as as Ki neow!!Randy Cornhole wrote:As far as i'm aware, Mai ow = not want. Mai = not Ow = want.
So, Unless im in the mood for buying 20 baht flowers or other useless stuff
Mai ow khap, Pom KI NEOW!! Now i can say Mai ow khap in fairly good Thai i can shake anyone off without any sellers persistance.
How about Hoop Baht Kun paak yai! If ive transliterated it properly. When someones giving you an earful of Thai yakyak
'im Lao Khap' was another to learn when thai familys thought i could eat like a horse. trying to keep eating and not know how to say im full
And Hong nam ti ny??? After a near fatal accident of needing the toilet and a dash back to the only known toilet which was in the hotel quite a distance away.
Mai ow Khup, Pom Ki Neow :)

It's obviously my Janner accent
I've just given my wife your English translation, and she has said that is, "Hoop Baht Kun paak yai"
And then she wonders why I'll only talk Thai to my Grand Daughters - they don't take the p*ss .................... yet.

My Thai is limited, phrases that have helped are"mai ow cab", for flowers etc.Mai co jai(I don't understand) for persistant haggeling.
And my favourite, which is used in a Bg situation is to substite "mai pen dry" for "Bo pin yang doh", which is the Issan equivelant. The result is normaly, this man is no mug.
