The crunch will come, in many countries, when petrol engines are not allowed to be sold or driven and the infrastructure, i.e., the amount of charging stations available, cannot handle the amount of EV's on the road.

Thailand BOI Approves Enhanced Measure to Boost EV Sector; Reports 110.7 Billion Baht in Investment Applications in Q1

https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/2291762

In line with the Thai government’s policy to accelerate the growth of the domestic market for electric vehicles (EV) and help to quickly expand the related infrastructure, especially charging stations, the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) today approved revised incentives and conditions for investments in that sector.

Adding to the 5-year corporate income tax exemption available to investments in charging stations with at least 40 chargers, 25% of which are DC type, the revised measures now allow smaller charging stations to be eligible to 3-year tax benefits, Ms. Duangjai Asawachintachit, Secretary General of the BOI, told reporters.

The revised measures also abolish two requirements, namely the condition barring investors to receive additional benefits from other agencies, and the requirement for ISO certification. These two conditions are no longer relevant given that some chargers could be installed in other establishments such as hotels and condominiums, not necessarily at typical charging stations. Moreover, in order to ensure rapid expansion of charging facilities, a combination of several support measures may be required.

Charging station investors are now only required to adhere to the relevant safety regulations and to submit either a plan to implement an EV Smart Charging System or to connect to an EV Charging Network Operator Platform which is to be developed as a central mechanism to create an efficient management for both operators and battery electric vehicle (BEV) users.

“We have listened to the EV-related investors’ concerns and revised the measures to ensure that our incentives stay relevant in a fast-changing business environment. This will enable investors, particularly SMEs and startups to have more access to BOI benefits, and manage their costs more effectively,” said Ms. Duangjai, who was speaking after a board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha.

The BOI already provides comprehensive incentives to the EV sector’s supply chain, with measures to promote the manufacturing of both complete vehicles and essential parts.

the rest of this article is not EV specific.....................

But what does this mean:
Charging station investors are now only required to adhere to the relevant safety regulations and to submit either a plan to implement an EV Smart Charging System or to connect to an EV Charging Network Operator Platform which is to be developed as a central mechanism to create an efficient management for both operators and battery electric vehicle (BEV) users.
Safety regulations yes, but "Charging System Network Operator Platfrom". Yet another govenment department designed to fleece the plebs?

Why does it always seem to involve some hi-so woman?

Mercedes launches first luxury electric SUV

https://www.bangkokpost.com/auto/review ... gh-voltage

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its latest all-electric Mercedes-EQ sub brand and this time it's a luxury SUV.

Introduced via an online world premiere event, the EQS SUV follows the EQS and EQE saloons as the third model from the Mercedes-EQ line-up, and the first all-electric luxury SUV from the German brand.

The carmaker is preparing to offer the locally-assembled version of the EQS saloon in Thailand later this year, but distributor Mercedes-Benz Thailand says that there are currently no plans for local assembly of the EQS SUV, which will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The EQS, EQE and EQS SUV share the same platform, with an identical 3,210mm wheelbase, although the EQS SUV is 20mm higher, giving it off-roading capability. The exterior dimensions are 5,125mm length, 1,959mm width and 1,718mm height.

New BMW 7 Series arrives with a bold look for 2023

https://www.bangkokpost.com/auto/review ... k-for-2023

The 2023 BMW 7 Series luxury saloon has been revealed, with the top performance model being fully electric.

Badged as the i7 xDrive60, the new BMW flagship saloon comes with dual electric motors offering an output of 544hp and a 101.7kWh battery, boasting a range of up to 625km. Electrical consumption is claimed at 18.4-19.6kWh/100km.

The seventh-generation 7 Series is built on BMW's flexible CLAR (cluster architecture) platform that allows the car to be fitted with an internal combustion engine, PHEV or electric powertrain.

According to BMW, the new 7 Series will be officially launched at the end of this year and come in only the electric version in Europe during the initial period. But for China (its largest market), the US and other select sales regions, petrol, diesel and 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrains will also be offered. The PHEV will do 80km in electric mode.

If & when available, don't think many will be buying here. 4 BMW's current offerings here
start at the ฿2.2 mill mark with unimpressive specs. Other 3 are ฿3+ to 6 mill

Updated 2022 list for what may or may not be available here. 4 added since 2021 list.
3 BMWs
1 GWM - Ora Good Cat 👍

Waiting for the BYD Dolphin to hit the market. Blade battery tech.
3000 cycles @ 400 kms knock around town range, so good for 1.2 mill kms 👍
OK, reality, maybe 500+k kms combined city/hwy.

Impressive figures, but also biased with a huge drop in "Passenger Car Sales" in January. Had a look at the top EV seller - the Audi Q4 e-tron. Nice looking motor, but as always with EVs, out of my price range! I wonder what the 2nd Hand EV market will look like in years to come - what's the effect of battery life, would it be worth looking at 2nd Hand, will costs come down to make EV's readily available to all?

As someone who knows very little about the subject, it seems that it's all about batteries. If you could purchase a used EV and put a new battery in it, that would be the way to go.

If I had a crystal ball………..

Who knows what the future might hold with regards to EV’s and batteries - there’s been talk of Solid State batteries becoming mainstream by about 2025, which supposedly will offer greater range and much faster charging times than the current lithium-ion type and at same or lower price, but let’s wait and see? It could well be that at some stage, replacement SS batteries will become available to replace lithium-ion, but I’m sure that’s a few more years down the line, but it’s certainly not beyond the wildest dreams, which should make the second hand market………interesting!!

I think I'll pass. There are some on here, Steve G. and Pharvey as a quick example, where an electric car may make sense. Those of us over 70 I really don't think it does, especially here in Thailand. The older we get, the less we drive and the less receptive we are to change. How often do we buy a new car, or will buy another new car? I think I'll go to the big junk yard in the sky belching diesel and the like.
