pharvey gets it right..... our chap is Charles Babbage, the father of modern computers, and that brass and copper whirlygig is one of his first "analytical engines" as computers used to be called....I prefer that name to computer myself.

There is a small online community of steampunk fans who modify their computer cases called the Babbage League...here are some examples of their case modding.....Id love to own one of these

The obvious link between Babbage and Turing is of course computer development, although another link is that the Babbage engines also shared some design fuctionality with the infamous ENIGMA coding devices that Turing and his colleagues worked on at Bletchley Park during WW2.

Ok..... on a theme

This last one is called: "The Antikythera mechanism". It was recovered in 1900–1901 from the Antikythera wreck.[3] Its significance and complexity were not understood until decades later. Its time of construction is now estimated between 150 and 100 BC.

It was recognized as the worlds fisrt computor, it was built on the island of rhodes and it tracked stars. It was made in the village of Kamiros, transported by donkey across to the other side of the island, where it was set up and tested. I was then stolen taken away by ship which sunk.

Isn't Rhodes where the people from San Marino fled to when the island blew up? I seem to recall some documentaries saying that San Marino is the best bet for the mythical Atlantis. I forget the name of the San Marino people though. Pete

Never heard of that, but the ancient Greeks certainly settled in parts of Italy. About the same time as the computor was built.
Rhodes itself was thought maybe to be part of Atlantis. On thre island diving was banned for many years, because of the amount of treasure at the bottom of the sea. It is very prone to earthquakes and between 2000 and 2500 years ago a lot of the island was swept away in earthquakes. Even on the island there are unexplored sites, the island has so much history you could spend years researching here. When you look at the land in certain parts of the island you can see the remains of cultivation and villages which are at the edge of the sea, and it is not erosion. I love walking the rocky coastlines it is amazing what you can see.

good one Team HHAD....correct on all counts.

Its the earliest known example of a mechanical computational device...in this case a sort of mechanical astrolabe.

Pete it is in the same area between Greece and Turkey. Because the area was prone to large earthquakes, many of the islands have missing cities. The whole area could have made up atlantis.

Slightly unclear picture there Lindosfan, but is it Gottlieb Daimler?

Picture looks like it's late 19th century/WWI, a complete guess though.
