Mother, daughters killed in train-car crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SURAT THANI: A woman and her two daughters, aged 7 and 4, were killed when their car was hit by a Yala-bound sprinter train at a crossing in Phunphin district on Saturday morning.

The crash happened at the unguarded crossing between Maluan and Thung Phor railway stations in tambon Phunphin, said Pol Lt Col Chokdee Sukhor, investigation chief at Phunphin police station, who was reported at around 8.35am on Saturday.

Police and rescue workers rushing to the scene found the badly damaged Totoya Yaris about 50 metres from the tracks.
Driver Amornrat Suator, 34, was found dead and trapped inside her car. Her two daughters -- Saranporn Phadthong, 7, and Supatchara, 4 -- were badly hurt. The girls were rushed to a hospital but they were later pronounced dead.

The locomotive of the Bangkok-Yala sprinter train was found partly damaged. Repair crews took one hour to fix the damaged section before the train continued to send passengers to the next stop at Surat Thani railway station.

Before the incident, Amornrat was taking her daughters to tutoring classes in tambon Phunphin. Police assumed the woman might have not noticed the oncoming train from Bangkok when she passed the unguarded crossing.
The force of the crash threw the car onto a grass field along the track.

Surat Thani governor Witchawut Jintor, who also went to the scene, said he had ordered officials to cut trees and grass along the railway crossing to improve visibility for motorists and people using the route. He would coordinate with the State Railway of Thailand to find ways to prevent a recurrence.

Thai media report another sprinter had hit a pickup truck at another unguarded crossing in Tha Chana district of this southern province on Jan 22 this year, killing two.

CHUMPHON: A passenger van rammed into a tree on the median of Highway 41 in Sawi district of this southern province on Sunday morning, killing the driver and five officials of the Marine Department and seriously wounding five other department officials, police said.

Police said the accident occurred at 11am at kilometre marker 40 of Highway 41 when the van with the driver and 10 Marine Department officials on board skidded off the road after the left front tyre burst.

The injured were admitted to Sawi and Thung Tako hospitals. Two of them were later pronounced dead.

An investigation revealed that the van, driven by Det Juanchainat, 59, was hired to take the 10 officials of the Marine Department back to Bangkok after they had finished their assignments in Phuket.

skidded off the road after the left front tyre burst.
If true, shows a lack of driving skill and probable lack of maintenance.

I could of course be wrong!!

Fuel tanker kills Italian couple
CHUMPHON: An Italian couple was killed when a fuel tanker overturned and crushed their motorcycle at a junction in Muang district on Thursday evening. The truck driver blamed "faulty brakes".

Giuliano de Santis, 42, and his wife Ilaria Rizzo, 37, died when a six-wheeled PT Power Co truck rolled over at a three-way junction in Moo 8 village of tambon Pak Nam.

Fuel spilled from the overturned tanker and emergency crews sprayed the scene with water and foam, warning people to stay clear and not to smoke because it could cause an explosion.

It was about two hours before the truck could be safely lifted and the road reopened.

Eyewitnesses said the fuel truck was going fast, travelling downhill from Matsee mountain, and turned left into Chumphon-Pak Nam Road. At the same time, the tourists' motorcycle was crossing the junction from the right. The truck overturned onto its right side, landing on top of the motorcycle.

Truck driver Suriyan Nakbamrung, 64, said he had been in the job for a decade without such an accident. He said the brake system of the truck malfunctioned and he could not slow down.

The Italians were being followed by four friends on two other motorcycles. Their friends were unhurt.

Family of five killed in Laos ravine plunge

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Five Thai tourists, who were family members, were killed when their pickup truck plunged into a ravine in Luang Prabang, Laos, on Friday.

The incident happened at 2.44pm when a four-door Toyota pickup truck with Samut Prakan licence plates plunged off a steep road and into a ravine between Muang Kasi-Muang Nan in Luang Prabang.

The crash killed all five -- three men and two women, Thai media reported on Saturday after the Nong Khai-based Prajak rescue team was alerted by its Lao rescue counterpart on Friday night.

The five victims, all from the Srisawat family, were identified as Sompop, Suraphan, Supat, Onn and Somporn.

Their bodies were sent to Luang Prabang Hospital.

Authorities believe the driver might not have been familiar with the route, which was a steep road, causing the vehicle to veer off the road into the ravine. The vehicle reportedly left Vientiane for Luang Prabang when the incident occurred, Thai media reported.

Relatives were asked to contact Chanwit Poonyanant, chairman of the Prajak rescue charity foundation at 088-3341669 and 096-9091669.

Two girl students killed, 3 wounded in Lampang car accident

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

LAMPANG: Two female students of a vocational college of this northern province were killed and three others injured after a car they were travelling in crashed into roadside trees and plunged into a ditch in Muang district early on Sunday.

Police said the accident occurred at about 1.40am when a Honda City slid off Phahon Yothin highway at Ban Mon Khao Kaeo in tambon Phichai before ramming into two roadside trees. The vehicle overturned and plunged into the ditch.

Police, rescue workers and doctors from Lampang Hospital were despached to the scene on being reported of the accident.
Two students were found dead on the front seat. They were Chamaiporn Putthawong, 22, the driver, and Pakinee Singkaeo, 22.

Three other girl students on the back seat -- identified only as Wanthana, Thanya and Panida, all 22 -- were injured.

A man who witnessed the accident and called the police for help said the Honda City was running in front of his car at a high speed, probably over 100 kilometers per hour, before swerving to the left, ramming into two trees and plunging into the ditch.

According to a police investigation, the five young women were students of a vocational college in Lampang. They were returning from a party to a dormitory in Muang district in a car, driven by Chamaiporn.

Two killed, one injured after trailers crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

PRACHIN BURI: A man and his 7-year-old daughter were killed and his wife injured after a trailer he was driving rammed into the rear of another trailer on Highway 304 (Nadi-Kabin Buri) in Nadi district of the eastern province on Sunday morning.

Pol Capt Tipol Waskhoksung, an investigator of Wang Khon Daeng police, said the accident occurred at 3.30am at kilometre marker 210 in tambon Buphram.

A police investigation revealed that a trailer, which was heading for Krabin Buri district was running downhill on a sharp bend in front of the Chao Pho Khao Pu Thon shrine in an adjoining area between Khao Yai and Thap Lan national parks, had a brake failure and rammed into the rear of another trailer running in front of it.
The accident caused the trailer which was running behind to overturn and block a traffic.

The trailer driver, identified as Preecha Chuahom, 36, and his 7-year-old daughter Jirawan Srirasa were killed. His wife, Arunee Srirasa, 40, who was injured, was admitted to Nadi Hospital.

Ms Arunee said the trailer driven by her husband was destined for Laem Chabang sea port in Chon Buri province from Nakhon Ratchasima. The woman said that when the accident happened she was asleep and woken up by her husband who told her he had lost the brake and was unable to control the vehicle. After that she went unconscious and recovered while being rushed to the hospital.

A section between Nadi and Kabin Buri districts on Highway 304 is where violent accidents involving lorries and passenger buses frequently happen, mostly from brake failures while running downhill. This section of the highway has been expanded to have four lanes, with a tunnel through mountains and a bridge across a valley to allow wild animals to roam mountainous jungle areas.

Motorbike suspended 10m above ground after crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SURIN: A crash injured several people and left a motorcycle hanging from power lines about 10 metres above the ground in Kap Choeng district late on Sunday night.

The impact sent the Honda motorcycle flying through the air. It ended up suspended from high-voltage power lines above a local road in the northeastern province after the accident.

Eyewitnesses said the bike was being carried in the bed of a silver Isuzu pickup truck.

The truck swerved to avoid a motorcyclist riding against the traffic, they said. The pickup overturned and came to rest upside down, its cab crushed, while the motorcycle on its bed soared upwards and was caught on the power cables.

Five people in the pickup truck, registered in Surin, were injured and were sent to Kabchoeng Hospital. Four of them were identified as Chatchai Wongcharoen, Peerapat Wongcharoen, Surasak Soodtong and Detnarong Phumlee.

Police were investigating the accident.

Bus rear-ends truck, driver crushed, 34 passengers injured

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SARABURI: The driver of an interprovincial provincial bus was crushed to death and 34 passengers hurt when he drove into the back of a truck on the main highway in Muang district on Thursday night.
Two passengers were seriously injured.

The crash happened at kilometre marker 101-102 on Saraburi-bound Phahon Yothin Road in tambon Pak Khaosarn around 11.20pm.
The front of the Ubon Ratchathani-Bangkok bus, operated by Ubon Air Co, was torn open and caved in.

Next to the wrecked bus was an overturned 10-wheel truck, and a damaged pickup truck was stopped on the road.
Bus driver Atthaphon Ekkapong, 38, of Ubon Ratchathani, was crushed to death, his body trapped in the wreckage. His head was missing, police said.

Many passengers, adults and children, were hurt and crying for help when emergency units arrived on the scene. Rescue workers assisted them all from the bus wreckage and took them to Saraburi Hospital.

Media reported that 34 passengers were injured, and two were in serious condition.

Bus attendant Waithoon Rodchai, 40, told police there were 41 passengers. The bus left Mor Chit terminal at 9.30pm on Thursday, bound for Ubon Ratchathani. He was sleeping at the stairs next to the driver when the crash occurred and had no idea what happened.

The truck driver, Khomsan Cherdchoo, 38, told police he was travelling in the left lane and the pickup truck was in the right lane before the crash.

Suddenly, the bus travelling behind crashed violently into his truck, which overturned and rammed into the pickup truck. It was fortunate nobody in the pickup truck was hurt, Mr Khomsan said.

Pol Capt Saroj Ratwiroj, deputy investigation chief at Muang district, said it appeared the bus driver dozed off. There were no marks indicating he had applied the brakes.

Police would question the passengers. The investigation was continuing, he said.

Three killed when train hits stalled truck on crossing

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

NAKHON SAWAN: Two adults and a child were killed and another person injured when their stalled truck was hit by a Phichit-Bangkok train at a level crossing in Takhli district on Wednesday morning.

Those killed were identified as Busaraporn Padungjit, 49, Tanadol Padungjit, 11, and Chaweewan Klingboon, 55. The injured person was Narumol Padungjit, 60. All were natives of tambon Don Kha in Tha Tako district.

Police said they were on a merit-making visit to Wat Khao Phu Kha, about one kilometre from the level crossing, which has no barriers or warning lights.

The Bangkok-bound train number 211 hit their silver pickup truck, registered in Bangkok, about 9am.

The locomotive was slighty damaged. The train was halted for about an hour after the collision, waiting for a replacement locomotive. No one on the train was hurt.

Eyewitnesses said the pickup truck had stalled on the railway track. The driver, Busaraporn, tried to reverse off the track, but could not because several other vehicles were in line behind it. Then the train slammed into the truck.

The unidentified train driver told police he repeatedly sounded his horn as he approached the crossing. He did not know why the driver did not drive forward off the track but instead tried to reverse, even though there were other vehicles closely behind him.

Police were investigating the incident.
