This week he went to the immigration office to apply for the one-year extension and was rejected because the money must be in the account for 12 months. I have never heard of such a thing before.
Sounds like a misunderstanding

I worked in different countries all my working life and none of these countries had any cash deposit or anything similar!!!!!!
The cash deposit is for a retirement or marriage visa. If you work here you can get a non B and work permit. No cash deposit required

I’ve just read the retirement visa requirements on the London Thai Embassy website and a one year fixed deposit is listed as a requirement for a five year O-X visa but not for the one year O-A.

When I did this many years ago now, the 800,000 had to have been in ones bank account for 3 months.

Yes, that's what I thought too. But a new rule says that there must always be at least 400,000 baht in the account. Maybe that's why it was rejected.

How "new"? Thought that was always the case?

LOL, it depends how long 'always' is. It changed for my 2019 visa, so must have changed in 2018. That was the point where I refused to deposit 400K in a Thai bank, which I could never touch, even in an emergency. That was when the monthly transfer/credit advice method was born as an alternative, and I took advantage.

I have been using the monthly income route since I first moved here in 2014. It's not new.

That would have been with Embassy Letter. When the Embassies said no more in 2018, that was when I switched to the Credit Advice method. The Credit Advice change was when the 400K in a Thai Bank became mandatory.

Yes, it was a bonus that after the embassy screw up by Thai immigration, that the whole process became much simpler.

Which way round was it? Was it...

a. You had to have a min of 400k in, as opposed to nothing(for 6 months)

Or

B. You could take out 400 of the 800k for 6 months

Back in the day, to get you first 'Retirement Visa' you needed 800,000฿ in the bank 3 months prior to applying for your first visa. You could spend the 800,000฿ the day after renewal, but had to bring it back to 800,000฿ 3 months before renewal. Personally, I used to live on the 800,000฿ throughout the year, and top up once a year.

After that, you either repeated the 800,000฿ process each year, or obtained a yearly letter from your Embassy (for a cost) confirming that your annual income was 65,000฿ per month (no need for any funds in the bank).

IMHO the Embassy did us a big favour because the Credit Advice route does not cost us anything.

Still embassies doing income letters such as the Norwegian one. The cost is not more than 1000 baht.

However, since that change to income method, the 65K has to be remitted to Thailand. Previously, you only had to show an overseas income of the above. There was no requirement to transfer a satang of that - might have been difficult to live but that was the letter of the law.

And I won't mention potential tax in Thailand this year - oops, just did.

Yes, but still 1,000฿ more than a Credit Advice.
