Hot?, it actually gave me goose bumps when I walked out this morning. I have to find my long sleeve flannel shirt and get it laundered in preparation! :D Not to worry, it all went away and is now hot and sunny at 32C with heat index of 39C. :( Pete

18 provinces warned of flash foods because of Ketsana storm's influence

Residents of 18 provinces were Sunday warned to brace themselves for heavy rains and flash floods because of a tropical storm in Philippines.

In its daily weather forecast issued at4 am, the Meteorological Department said Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phetchabun, Loei, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Sawan, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong and Phangnga would be hit by heavy rains and possible flash floods.

The department said the heavy rains would be unleashed by the influence of low pressure trough over the lower North, the Central and the Northeast Thailand and the rather strong southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

The weather condition would be complicated by the influence of the Ketsana tropical storm in the South China Sea or the west of Luzon island, the Philippines is moving westward.

The storm is expected to affect Thailand's weather during September 30 to October 3.

RATS :cuss:

We arrive on the first and I plan to go to HH between 5&9 before I'm off to Guam. I was in HH this time last year and it wasn't bad. It seems like the storms tracked north, and the local weather was limited to some pretty impressive thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Is that typical or should I plan on wetter beach time?

Not a good week to live in Hua Hin either Pete, we've had three big storms over the last ten days, including a gully-washer yesterday with wind that broke down our (nearly 3 meter tall) centerpiece bougainvilla tree in our back yard! We bought it at 2 meters five years ago. It was worth 10k then. It was a lot bigger now so to replace it with one like it (if you could find one) would probably cost 15k baht! :(

This one (photo a year old, much bigger now); snapped the trunk at ground level...

That's too bad HHF, those things are beautiful when grown that way. Looking at the size of the trunk I would say it was probably 10-12 years old+ when you got it. :( Pete

The saddest part Pete, is that it's like losing an old member of the family... it was the first thing we planted when we started landscaping the back yard; then we designed the rest of the yard, features, and walkways around it...

Sorry to hear this HHF, that's a beautiful tree... er, was. I've never seen them grown this way. Does aggressive pruning bring about the stocky trunk? Must have really been blowing to have cut that trunk.

Isan gets set for Ketsana
Philippines appeals for international help

The Meteorological Department is warning 10 northeastern provinces they will bear the brunt of Typhoon Ketsana, which is moving swiftly towards the coast of Vietnam and is due to hit Thailand tomorrow.

The provinces bracing for severe weather conditions are Amnat Charoen, Buri Ram, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Si Sa Ket, Surin and Ubon Ratchathani.

The typhoon is moving westward at a speed of 15 kilometres an hour.

"More rain is likely with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall," the Meteorological Department said yesterday.

"People in risk areas along foothills near waterways and in lowland areas should beware of flooding conditions during this period."

Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Anucha Mokkaves said flood relief officials could handle the coming storm and all provincial agencies had been alerted to monitor the situation closely.

The Irrigation Department was also discharging water from its reservoirs to prepare for heavy rains, its director-general Chalit Damrongsak said.

Anont Sanitwong na Ayutthaya, director of the Climate Impact Science and Technology Centre, said Thailand would face heavy rain but not strong winds from Typhoon Ketsana because the storm should ease while it passes over Vietnam and Laos.

Typhoon Ketsana is now moving away from the Philippines after it devastated many parts of the country. The death toll there has reached 140.

The Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman said no Thais living in the Philippines had been affected by the typhoon after it hit Manila.

The Philippines appealed for international help yesterday and warned a new storm could strike this week, with tens of thousands of citizens still displaced from their homes.

At least 32 people were reported missing, and authorities were still trying to verify scores of unconfirmed deaths, including in hard-hit Manila and nearby Rizal province, where there were reports about 99 more people had died, Defence Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said.

Tens of thousands of Philippines residents began a massive clean-up of the carnage left by Typhoon Ketsana, which struck on Saturday, bringing the region's worst flooding in 42 years and triggering deadly landslides.

The extent of the devastation became clearer yesterday with mud-covered communities, cars upended on city streets and huge numbers of villagers without drinking water, food and power.

Since the storm struck, the government has declared a "state of calamity" in metropolitan Manila and 25 storm-hit provinces, allowing officials to use emergency funds for relief and rescue.

The homes of more than 450,000 people were inundated. About 115,000 of them were brought to 200 schools, churches and other evacuation shelters, officials said. Troops, police and volunteers have been able to rescue more than 7,900 people, Mr Teodoro said.

He told a news conference help from foreign governments would ensure the Philippine government could continue its relief work. Government welfare officials have begun focusing on providing food, medicine and other necessities to those in emergency shelters.

President Gloria Arroyo has said Ketsana and the flooding were "an extreme event" that "strained our response capabilities to the limit but ultimately did not break us".

The US has donated US$100,000 (3.3 million baht) and deployed a military helicopter and five rubber boats manned by about 20 American soldiers from the country's south, where they have been providing counter-terrorism training. The United Nations Children's Fund has also provided food and other aid.

Officials expected the death toll to rise as rescuers penetrate villages blocked off by floating cars and debris.

The 42.4cm of rain that swamped metropolitan Manila in just 12 hours on Saturday exceeded the 39.2cm average for all of September, chief government weather forecaster Nathaniel Cruz said.

If you hear a MAYDAY, it's me. We have 620mm of rain forecast between tonight and Saturday morning and it's already starting.

Looking at HH, I think you'll be spared. All of my weather is coming from the NW, and HH is under a SSE influence.

Like all past years over here, October is the wettest monsoon month.

Time to drain a foot + out of the pool and wax up the surfboard. Pete

Big blow over here last night Pete... rain as hard as I've seen accompanied by fierce thunder and lightening and wind that was so strong that the rain was blowing horizontally (from east to west). My back porches (1st and second floors) have up to 5 meters of ceiling and eve and the rain was still blowing through (closed) sliding doors on both floors. The wind and rain was coming from the direction of the sea parallel to the ground hitting the doors directly up to eye level even with all that overhead protection!

I heard it and came down at 11 p.m. to check on the dogs and they were both soaked and huddled (leaning) against the back door and were still getting rained on with that 5 meters of ceiling between them and the open sky! They are normally not house dogs but I let them sleep in the laundry room after that.

Worst storm I've seen here, but only lasted a couple of hours. Reminded me of a hurricane I weathered in a hotel in Florida once!

Not nearly as bad over here last week HHF. Of the 620mm predicted we didn't even get a third, although what we did get was fierce. They say more to come this week this side. Pete

Hi Finn.
The weather is dry and wet this time of year.
I suggest you start to read this thread from page one, then follow one of the links, and voila, the weather forecast will come through in all it's glory.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

I think HH is like over here, or any seaside location during the rainy season. We were out playing golf last week and in the space of an hour, the clouds, breeze and showers came from three distinct, different directions.

Hopefully all will stabilize within November, and we'll then start complaining about no rain until we get the Songkran thunderboomers once again in April. Pete
