Wife escapes with injuries after tyre bursts and causes driver to lose control
PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: A driver was burned to death and his wife escaped with injuries when a refrigerated truck caught fire after a tyre burst, causing the vehicle to crash into a high-voltage power pole in Pran Buri district on Saturday.
The accident occurred near kilometre maker 244 on Bangkok-bound Phetkasem Road in tambon Nong Tataem on Saturday morning, said Pol Lt Natthaphon Thalaenoi, investigation officer at the Pran Buri police station.
Police, rescue workers and fire crews that rushed to the scene found the 10-wheel truck with Ranong licence plates engulfed in flames.
Firefighters took about 10 minutes to bring the blaze under control while electricians cut the power in the immediate area.
The truck driver was found dead inside the vehicle with severe burns. Rescue workers used a cutting tool to pry open the wreckage to retrieve his body. His wife sustained injuries and was taken to Pran Buri Hospital.
The names of the driver and his wife were not released.
A police investigation found that the truck carrying fish from Ranong was on its way to Bangkok when a tyre burst. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which plunged into a roadside ditch and then hit a high-voltage power pole and caught fire.

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents
Has it really been 9 days since the last reportable accident? I haven't seen any of note in the News except a tragic event where a 2 1/2 year old following his Granny ran out right in front of a car in Hat Yai and was crushed.
Fewer tourist vans and busses equals fewer accidents, and perhaps more people working from home and not commuting, plus staff laid off and factories not at full production.
It's comparable to the massive drop in air pollution in China; here we have fewer road deaths it seems.

The table in this Daily News article ( https://www.dailynews.co.th/regional/761957) shows deaths at the scene for the first 9 days of March. The figure for the 9th is extraordinary, but you might suspect some reports of deaths may have been delayed over the weekend. Facemasks aren't really as good as helmets and seatbelts for injury prevention.

Less road deaths during Songkran because of lockdown
https://www.thaienquirer.com/12085/less ... -lockdown/
Normally considered one of the most dangerous places to drive in the world, the death toll on Thailand’s roads during Songkran has decreased by more than 200 cases year-on-year because of the nationwide lockdown.
According to the Ministry of Interior’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), the number of fatalities from road accidents during the period of April 10-16 has decreased from 386 cases in 2019, down to 167 cases in 2020. That represents a decrease of 56.74 per cent or by 219 lives.
The number of accidents has decreased from 3,338 cases in 2019 to 1,307 cases in 2020, representing a drop of 60.84 per cent or 2,031 cases.
Deputy Interior Minister Niphon Bunyamanee said even though the holiday period has been extended, the DDPM was still collecting information.
With alcohol being banned and a curfew in place, there were less cars on the street and less drunk people behind the wheels.
Drunk driving is the number one cause of death during the Songkran period.
Every cloud has a silver lining.

Oh dear! That gives them ammunition to have a year on year ban on alcohol sales.
Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents
It may not be a bad thing if it will save that many lives. Thailand has been closed for the last month for 49 deaths, so a little pain to save a lot of lives (of course, this is from a non-drinker

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents
Agreed that it's prevented some loss of life. However, that's not the solution.
Why not ban cars, driving at night, etc etc. It's down to education, mindset and proactive policing backed up by sensible deterrents. Much more heavier penalties and the like. Of course that will come down to having an effective traffic police division and enforcement.
Ok. It's not going to happen in my lifetime.

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents
The daily death toll has not changed in Thailand, but idiotic driving has just been replaced as the top cause. Now it is gun crime and suicides.
