Covid-19 News & Updates
Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
My daughter's in Texas at the mo. She tells me that I'm banned from going outside. I told her that there is confusion over that. She said that what she's heard in the states from the media is that over 70's are banned from leaving the house in Thailand.
I'd also like to see a definitive instruction, 'banned' or 'recommended'?
How do the police view it? Then again, I guess it depends which policeman you talk to.

Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
I think it comes down to a problem with the translation from Thai to other languages. I've now read both versions in a few places. Some also say "over 70" and some say "70 and over".
As I think mentioned, who knows how a local official may interpret it all. Some one way and some the other for sure.
I'll keep searching for some definitive reading and clarification.

Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
I drove to Phetchaburi this morning and on the way had to stop at a police checkpoint. The officer indicated to me to open the window and then asked my wife the purpose of our journey - he showed no interest in my age (I’m not 70 until next year), so hopefully they are taking a relaxed view of this specific issue, although I understand that if you are over 70 you will want more certainty
Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
Here is the official in both Thai and translated already. This and everything that the wife says and has read indicates the 70 and over is a "should do" or "recommended" and not commanded to do. I'll post up the Thai sign boards from "Realnews thailand" you see on this Facebook page in a moment.

Note: What I cannot find is the official signed and stamped Thai language document that we can translate (attempt) ourselves. If they published in its entire original form I can't find it.

Thank you that Pete. Based on that, we will resume our daily jaunts for exercise with no human contact. However, we won't put ourselves at risk by shopping/getting close up with other people.

Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
Read by my daughter (Luk Kung) and my wife who categorically say that first paragraph on the last screen is that over 70 and under 5 is BANNED from leaving the house except to buy food or visit a Dr.
I did stress that "Are you sure it doesn't say 'should not' or 'recommended'.
Absolutely not they tell me. Over 70 can only go out with specific reasons as stated. i.e. to buy food, see a doctor, immigration. All other reasons are not acceptable.
I've just been told to take a picture of the order as if the police question why I'm outside, I can state that I'm going to buy food for example, and show the police the order.
But just to re-iterate, I'm told it's a BAN except for a specific reason.
Now I'm sure we're even more confused. I would take my daughter's translation as she is bi-lingual, born and bred in the UK.

Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
I've just shown this to my step-daughter in the states and she confirms what my resident daughter says. She says that it's quite common to translate that as a 'should' or 'recommend' but in true Thai it should be translated as a 'must'.
Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
I'll get one more opinion from my daughter in London. If she concurs with the other three then I'll call that unanimous and act accordingly.

Go for your walks BB. The third signboard header is ควรทำ which most definitely says "should do". Further to that the Bangkok Post is the definitive source here for English language readers and they're not going to make a cock up on something so important.
When I go for my 5 mile walks I don't take any ID anyway.
The stress of this virus is bad enough without going around in circles.

Re: China Coronavirus (Covid-19)
Other than the fact we know TIT, it beggars belief how such an important subject could be left so inconclusive as to its meaning - surely as a recognised second language in Thailand, somebody in an official Government capacity could issue an English translation !!
