What is this?

Post by HHTel »

This was dropped on my patio a couple of nights ago. Maybe by an owl or something. The pic isn't so good. It's about 3 inches long and the thickness of a little finger. When touched it sprang into the opposite coil. Didn't seem to have any means of forward movement and as you can see, appears to have a head with eyes.
I've never seen anything like this. Anyone out there know what it is?

It looks like some form of wasp larvae / pupae, maybe a mud dauber wasp, or similar.

Its a result of that C.E.R.N tube thingy. I knew we would bring something back from the dark side...

Seriously though I have been looking on google for about 45 mins trying to find out what it is and have drawn a blank.
What I suggest (For I am curious now) is if the wife hasan't eaten or sold it already, let it develop, grow or whatever it does and let us all know...

It’s amazing what you will try to find on the internet when you have nothing better to do.
This is the nearest thing I could find; it’s the caterpillar of the Oleander Sphinx Hawkmoth, native to Thailand and is described as being about 8cm long.
I couldn’t find anything else that looked anything like it!

Its got all the same markings as Steve Gs pic.

It could be that starting to form its Chrysalis.

Well HHTel I can think of three possiblities.

From your description: When touched it sprang into the opposite coil. Didn't seem to have any means of forward movement and as you can see, appears to have a head with eyes.
It could be Samak's government

Number 2 the pupea of the caterpiller mentioned if this is the case it will change soon, eat its way through a couple of trees and turn into a butterfly.

For 3 you would have to check Richards DVD

Thanks guys. Seems like it is the pupae of one of these big moths.

Can't really wait and see though as the wife through it over the wall. "Looks horrible. Has to go!"

I did suggest that she could probably eat it and she did think for a while before replying!!

I suppose over the wall is better than against the wall.

Seriously this time Steve is spot on

I had a different species of Sphinx moth lay its eggs on an orange tree in front of my house every year for yonks and the life cycle of these things is amazing.

First the moth or butterfly lays eggs on the favoured tree, some species will only lay on one kind of tree, the eggs hatch into a catterpiller that eats its way through as much of the tree as it can and grows till it is of a size to pupate (which is what you found) then it covers its self with a membrane and hangs by the rear end from a branch and after a suitable time a moth or butterfly emerges, mates and starts the cycle again.

This little miracle is the equivalant to us going to sleep for a month and waking up as a bird.

Some only live a few days as a moth or butterfly as they have no digestive system and cant eat others like the monarch butterfly can live for several years

If you have a tree handy to where you found it, particularly an Oleander, have a hunt round in it and you may find some more hanging from the branches or even the catterpiller eating the leaves
