VISA RUNS

Post by trevorw »

I need to go to Ranong (Myanmar) sometime between about Oct 30 and Nov 7 to get my 30 day visa renewed. Any info re mini-van trips to the border during that week? Or any info at all on this subject.

If you're own your own, the best way is probably by public bus. There's one for Phuket, that stops in Ranong, and leaves HH at 8am. Do check this time. It's a while since I've done the run now. The new bus station is south of Market Village on the same side of the road.
The trip down takes about 6 hours. Get a motorcycle taxi from Ranong bus station to Imm which is at the pier now - the rider will know. Arrange for him to be there when you get back from Burma and agree the price for the return journey to the bus station. Should be 150-200 Baht.
A long tail boat will take you over the estuary - cost about 300 return. Journey takes about 30 mins one way. You'll need 10 US Dollars in Burma for your entry and exit stamps. Get the note from a bank in HH first as it'll be twice the price on the black market in Ranong. Make sure it's in pristine condition or Burmese Imm won't accept it and they'll give you a hard time about accepting Baht. You'll also need one copy of the details page of your passport in Burma as well. They can do the copy for you. It's slightly more expensive over there.
Back to Thai Imm for your entry stamp and then the bus station. Return buses to BKK, via HH, leave pretty regularly in the last afternoons. Expect it to take about 7 hours on the way back. You can be back here at about 1am. The whole trip, including the dollars, should cost about 1,500 Baht, maybe slightly less.
There was a minibus service that's organised on the top floor of the old shopping mall in the centre of town. Afraid I don't know their schedules (they don't go every day) or the cost. It'll be more expensive than doing it on your own, but quicker.

Thanks for the excellent detail. Especially about the 10 dollar bill!

I would rather do a mini-bus run, so if anyone knows of a reliable outlet in HH, please get back to me.

Thanks v much. T
