Widespread flooding, traffic gridlock as summer storm hits Bangkok

Widespread flooding, resulting in traffic gridlock, was reported in Bangkok this morning after a summer storm.

One of the worst affected areas was the in-bound flyover at the Phet Kasem-Ratchapruek intersection in Phasi Charoen district, where only one lane was passable, resulting in a tailback to Phran Nok-Kanchanapisek intersection.

In-bound Ramkhamhaeng Road was also heavily flooded near Ramkhamhaeng Soi 24, with a queue of traffic stretching back to Ramkhamhaeng Hospital.

Many commuters were seen wading along the flooded roads in the Din Daeng area, some with their shoes removed.

The “Rain” hashtag top trended on “X” this morning.

According to the Meteorological Department, five districts in Bangkok were hit by heavy rain, measured from 63.5mm in Thawee Wattana to 91.5mm in Bang Khae in the past 12 hours. The other three hardest-hit districts were Phasi Charoen, Nong Khaem and Pom Prab.

It is reported that, yesterday afternoon, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt ordered the city’s anti-flooding centre to instruct the Drainage and Sewerage Department to be on standby to cope with the storm.

In physical terms I’m not sure, but where we live it was a lot. Our old house had a swimming pool so it was fairly easy to measure quite accurately but our new house doesn’t have a pool but I’m sure in was getting on for 50mm.

Hua Hin had 72.4 mm on Friday(March averages at 56mm for the month)

And a total 96mm year to date

So most of this year's rain came on Friday night in one big dump!

Mercury could hit 50C by 2084
Thailand could see temperatures hit 50C in the next 60 years, with the number of days where the mercury climbs above 40C rising from nine to 75 each year, a leading climate scholar said on Wednesday.

Assoc Prof Seree Supratid, director of the Center for Climate Change and Disasters at Rangsit University, posted on his Facebook page claiming the mercury will peak on Monday before dropping a week later during the Songkran holiday.

Sukhothai is expected to see the highest temperatures in the years to come, said Assoc Prof Seree, adding the province could expect temperatures to climb to 49C by 2084. The current provincial record is 44.5 degrees, logged in 2016, he added.

The hottest provinces after Sukhothai over the next six decades will likely be Phichit (48.74C), Chai Nat (48.48C), Nakhon Sawan (48.08C), Maha Sarakham (47.85C), Khon Kaen (47.58C), Roi Et (47.56C), Lampang (47.19C), Lamphun (47.13C) and Nakhon Ratchasima (46.19C) while Bangkok will see 44.9C, said Assoc Prof Seree.

No mention of Kanchanaburi, one of the hottest places in the country where I have seen temperatures reach 47 degrees in previous El Niño years.

I agree, Kanchanaburi gets pretty hot. As for the first 3 on the list, I was there Saturday/Sunday, and that felt extremely hot then. I actually kept the aircon on all night in the hotel, which is very unusual for me. They're probably talking a 5C hike on what I've just experienced.

Govt warns of ‘extreme heat’
The government has issued a warning about extreme heat in the coming days and advises people to avoid staying outdoors due to risks of having a heat stroke.

The Meteorological Department on Saturday released a daily weather forecast saying that a heat low-pressure cell was enveloping the northern regions of Thailand. As a result, hot to very hot weather conditions and haze throughout the country were expected during the day.

The agency added that from April 8-11, high air pressure from China will extend to upper Thailand and the South China Sea, while easterly and southeasterly winds will bring moisture from the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to the upper part of the country where the weather will be hot to very hot.

“An outbreak of a summer storm in the form of thunderstorms, gusty winds and hail is possible at the initial stage in the Northeast, with lightning strikes expected in some areas. Other regions will be affected in the next stage,” the Meteorological Department said.
