I think home weather stations anyone can buy these days dump the rain collector automatically after reporting the quantity to a monitoring computer. I would hope cities have that or better.

We've had this question before for certain as I know I've made reference to it

I'm pretty sure ThaiMet measure from 0600 to 0600

I will try to check again

Just the ongoing debate about what time to take rain measurements from, how many millimetres fell when and where!!

I just appears to me that some must be so bored as to take an interest.

If you don't know something, then there are no stupid questions. I don't think I was bored, but the question was certainly food for thought. It was asking something we all take for granted, and I doubt many actually knew the answer. At least, I never knew the answer, but maybe I had a sheltered upbringing.

[Edit] HHTel, how many times have you reported rainfall (or lack of it) at your home?

Haha. You got me. Yep the lack of rainfall at my house has been mentioned multiple times. However that wasn't an interest in the weather rather than peeing off everyone who was coping with floods!

Tambon Hin Lek Fai stretches from the look out point to way past the other side of the by-pass. It would be useful to know whereabouts the measurements are taken?

^Many is the time that I've been in the sun in my garden in Hin Lek Fai looking at intense rain on those hills behind Black Mountain Golf course.
I suppose that only averaging would be meaningful over an area that size because tropical storms can be so localised.

If a child or anyone ever asks you why not stand under a tree in a storm, show them this photo. They won't forget it for life. (National Geographic photo)

Hua Hin is known as being the driest place in Thailand, but September is usually as wet as it gets. However, even during periods of bad weather here, rain is usually confined to a couple hours late afternoon.

Does some poor sod have to empty to rainfall measuring equipment at midnight or is it from say 6am onwards

Cheers
