Four of us visited last month and camped in the campground about 30km from entrance. We got by with a 2 wheel drive pickup but four wheel drive is really better and absolutley necessary in rain. Campground is clean and well kept. There's showers but only cold water. No lights in the bathrooms. Bomb sites only toilets. Very cold up there early in the morning last month and probably this month too. Camp fires not permitted. You can use charcoal. You must protect grass beneath your BBQ. Gas lights recommended. Good view of sea of fog last month. From camp site we drove 6 km to car park and hiked 4.5 km to falls. Good hike down. Heck of a hike back up. From the falls we checked GPS and found our camp site was just 1.18km as crow flies.
Well worth the visit and the hike.

You can get there and explore the dam and local area by car but as said above you won't get very far once you're actually through the park gates.
