no concert but hopefully a lot of durian!

Post by Sukku »

Hello,

my name is Vanessa, I'm 28 years old and live in the north west of Germany.

Since the X-Japan concert in Paris has been postponed twice I wanted
to travel to Bangkok to see them there - but this concert has been postponed too

But since my boy-friend and I thought about traveling to Thailand we came to the point: "well if not going to a concert, than going to eat a lot of Durian!!"
so now we will be in Hua Hin from the 23rd March to 6th April :)
... hopefully there will be any durian than

As we only have flight + hotel + breakfast I'm now searching for some more information about Hua Hin - where to go to for sightseeing, food, and so on - that's how I found this forum.

Any suggestions about where to go to are welcome! :thumb:

This will be our first trip to Thailand - so we hope to have a good time.

Oh - are there any usefull thai phrases we should learn?

best regards

Vanessa

It's the middle of the night here Vanessa so it will be a few hours before others reply.

I live in Rayong Province where most of the Thai durian is grown. I'm afraid you won't find any that time of year unless it's been in cold storage (chill not frozen) since last season and if so, it will be terribly expensive. I hope you can prove me wrong and spot some somewhere.

Also, assume you know not to drink whisky, beer or any alcohol when eating Durian. Many deaths each year here among the Thai population doing that. Some kind of chemical reaction which increases blood pressure to very dangerous levels.

Stay tuned for more input form HH locals later today. Have a great vacation! Pete

Hello Pete,

thanks for your fast reply :)

No durian?
Durian in Germany costs around 1800 Baht - hopefully (if we find a durian somewhere arount Hua Hin) the price won't be as high as that.

Of course durian is not the only thing which makes thailand interesting for us - but it would have been terrific to get some since they are sooo expensive here in Germany.

Perhaps someone will have better news for me hehehe

Welcome to the forum Vanessa.

I posted on the other thread Pete, then found this one. Just mention that here in Korat there's plenty on sale at Tesco and The Mall, but you're right, it is expensive and not from here(Thailand).

Don't worry thougth, not quite in the realm of German prices.

Hi Sukku,

There is lots to see and do in and around Hua Hin. To begin with there are the beaches and water sports. Hua Hin beach is good for food and drink, relaxing in the sun or shade, and horseback riding in the surf, while Cha-Am, and Takiab beaches are probably better for water sports like banana boats, or jet skis.

If you are golfers, there are nine (I think now) championship courses in or near Hua Hin including the oldest course in Thailand right in the middle of town.

There are lots of parks to visit within a short drive like Hin Lek Fai mountain with the best veiwpoints of Hua Hin and Takiab, Palau with its waterfalls, and Sam Roi Yod, with it's many attractions.

There is an old Teak Palace between Hua Hin and Cha-Am that is worth a visit and Khao Takiab mountain, on the beach is worth a look with it's huge standing Buddha. Wat Huay Mongkol, just outside of town, is a temple and a tribute to an ancient monk with what is reputed to be the largest bronze statue in the world.

There is plenty of shopping with the night markets and the Market Village Mall and an incredible variety of restaurants and bars for a town this size.

Durian will indeed be very cheap here if it is in season. I'm not sure if it is or not as I don't eat it.

There are many many more interesting things to do in and around Hua Hin as well as interesting day trips to places like the floating market and a beautiful palace and temple complex on top of a mountain in Petchaburi.

You will not be bored.

Phrases to learn

Post by H2ODunc »

The most often used phrase for a Farang anywhere in HH is Mai Ow Kap / Ka, Kop Khun kap / Ka where Kap is said by the man and Ka is said by the lady. You will need this everywhere you go n HH as you will constantly be pestered to buy everything from silk to croaking wooden frogs. Oh and second is Peng Mak Meaning very expensive :D :D :thumb:
I never forget a face but in your case I'll make an exception!

just back from Tesco/Lotus and there was plenty of Durian there both whole and ready prepared. The ready prepared was between 100 and 200 baht, did not see a price on the whole Durian.

Hey!!

thanks to all of you for your hints and advices - you are all so kind! :)
Seems we will have to wait and see if we can find some Durian when we are in Thailand - I'm somehow confident to find some 8)

I don't know if we are interested in some water-sports, but at the moment we can't imagine what it will be like having a warm/hot weather since it is snowing and raining in Germany
but it seems that we will visit Khao Takiab in any case since one board member invited us already to visit him :thumb:

Without fail I'll bring my camera with me to make a lot of photos :)

Oh, thanks for the phrases - I have found a translation on the i-net of course - but to make it easier it would be nice if you'd write the translation for the phrases as well :)

Sea food is great! I will check them out of course..
mhm.. hopefully my boy-friend will come to.. he is ( a weekend-)vegetarian and does not like fish :(

thanks again to all of you!
