Elephant abuse at Hua Hin Hills Winery

Post by saitang »

My husband and I were looking for a nice wine tasting and elephant ride through the Hua Hin Hills Winery. We climbed on the elephant and started out, within ten feet the mahout was severely hitting the elephant on the head with the bullhook, just for straying two feet over to eat off a tree. This elephants head was full of holes and bloody of past beatings. We told the mahout to turn around and take us back to the boarding platform and tried to explain why we were so upset. It was one of the most horrible examples of animal abuse I have ever seen. We have been in Thailand for two months and have seen nothing like this so far. Please do not visit this winery or buy any wine from the local outlet store at the Hua Hin Market Place. We have contacted the owner of the winery via email to ask him to help this elephant and fire this particular mahout. I fear telling the mahout to just leave and take this elephant with him, would only bring about more abuse on this sad animal. I feel just sick about this. Are there any private or governmental agencies that could look into this? Thanks for any help...

Disgustingly and unnecessarily cruel behaviour. If they do this in front of tourists, what goes on behind closed doors? I would have grabbed the stick and beat the mahout over the head with it.

You should go onto Trip Advisor and tell this story so that the whole world knows about it and also tell your tour guide about it if you have one. Pity you didn't get it on video.

There is a wildlife rescue centre near here .Dawn put me in contact with them after I came across a very distressed monkey .The guy came and took the monkey away to a better life .Since I lost my phone I do not have his number any more .Perhaps other posters can help .

Even if it is terrible and cruel behaviour, wouldn't it be more sensitive to talk to the tourguide (if there is one) and the Winery directly and have them deal with the people they "employ"? ..the owner/Manager of the Winery might not even be aware of this situation! I don't think Thailand or local businesses needs additional negative publicity on a site like the one you mentionned.

Saitang, please give us an update on any reply from the Winery.

I think a complete product boycott is a little over the top, especially if the managers and owners of the winery don't know about this. I would give them a call and tell them what happened, elephants are highly revered in Thailand so I'm sure they will be supportive and understanding.

Hi Saitang,
I tried to post this 10 hrs ago but the U.K-Thai connection is being shite today.

Why dont you go back there but change your apperance, maybe hats, glass's etc and take some photo's and video footage.... hard, hard, evidance, then confront the vin yards owners, i think without this it maybe a little un fair to the vin yard as they may not know about the miss treatment of this elephant to post on any forum, if you go down this route and find hard evidance, and they still don't take any action, i think you will get a lot of support.
There is only 4000 elephants left in Thailand, compared to 100,000 one centry ago, and one miss treated is one two many.
The legal side of it i don't know maybe you should talk to an elephant or animal sanctury or ask Dawn on this forum for some advice.
I am in town end October if you Pm me close to the time i will go there and look at the situation.

My wife is from Surin, the elephant city up north, so i have a massive love for elephants, have a look at the farang connection website, and look at the elephant round up/ festival the biggest gathering of elephants in Thailand, You normaly get about 200, in the last week of november, you can also find some stuff on You Tube.

I would like to ask anyone else that has been to or going to the vin yard to post there finding's or opinion's here.
As Buksida said " elephants are highly reveired it the LOS"
but hay who doe's not love them.
