Go to your local immigration office

Post by Roel »

Just read that as from 15th February aliens can only deal with the immigration office that has administrative jurisdiction over the area where they live.

No more Bangkok trips then.

Interesting that they're making it official from 15th Feb. I've heard that unofficially this has been happening for some time (maybe last quarter of last year). I think Soi Suan Plu was getting overburdened and they're due to move sometime soon up to Chaeng Wattena.
Obviously this won't help people anywhere if they've got a problem with a local official reading the regulations their "own way". At least previously you had the option of trying BKK as well.

Will this apply to 90-day reporting as well?

Yes Barry, I'm afraid it will apply to the 90 days report as well.

Can somebody please explain the logic behind this?

I find it a bit baffling - e.g. up to now if I've been travelling on business or pleasure within Thailand, I've been able to walk into the immigration office in Pattaya, Phuket, etc. to report - a simple 2 minute procedure.

So does this now mean that I have to plan my business trips relating to my Thai company in such a way that I have to be in Hua Hin for the 90-day reporting although I'm still in Thailand???

Sounds bloody daft to me :? :banghead:

And for the good news ........... Soi 102 Immigration closes permanently on 20th March and will be in Prachuap, 120km drive.
Nice!

So how will guest houses register their occupants then - now has to be done within 24-48 hours.

Will they be expected to go to Prachuab on a daily basis?? :cuss:

How much "grace" do get in HH immigration center around the date you are supposed to report, ie someplaces give a week before and up to a week late and it's still OK.

How anally retentive are they on this matter?

Been out on the golf course this morning hurling my clubs around, so coming back on some of the points raised.
That's a blow that Imm are moving back to Prachuap. Are you sure, SJ? I assume you are.
It's crazy that you have to report in your own "constituency". Previously you could report anywhere, but the trend to get annual extensions has certainly been getting decentralised since last year.
Nevertheless, you can still report via BKK by mail:
http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en ... age=90days
This also clarifies that you can report 7 days either side of the exact date without being fined. I confirmed that when doing my extension last year in HH. HOWEVER, the above site is probably somewhat out of date so I'd take what they say there with a pinch of salt bearing in mind the recent announcements.

SJ What is the source of your info on the "permanent" closing of Singkon/ Soi 102??

This seems to go counter to what the Immigration dept seems to be trying to do. . .that is localize Immigration affairs.

I was just out there today for my 90 day. Fast and easy.

They have put up new signage and now have a big poster in front advertising their "services with a smile" complete with pictures of wai-ing officers. . .smiling!

No sign by the main turnoff though, the one after "Pride". The road is better than I have seen it in some time.

( OFF TOPIC??) The Office was "adorned" with students this morning. Four or five of them sitting behind desks giggling, smirking and chatting it up. This is a program that I seriously question. . .and you see it everywhere here ( hospitals, phone company, government offices, Tesco). These kids have access to all kinds of personal information to which in other countries they would never have access. I wonder if this "student - job shadow/placement program" has ever caused problems for Thai people. And what are they learning anyway?

PS, an afterthought.
Be careful of re-entry permits. I'm pretty sure that the office at Swampy has closed now. So if you're leaving the country it sounds like it's going to be trek to Prachuap to get the necessary stamp before you travel. The alternatives will be missing your flight or letting your extension and original visa lapse.

Can you please source this and start a new thread on it if it is true.
