This will be our second trip to Thailand and our first holiday in two years so we are very excited about it.
We are staying at the Anantara for ten nights.
I was wondering if anyone could provide any recommendations in tems of restaurants (in particular Thai and Seafood), must see places to visit and any hints and tips about Hua Hin life.
One query I do have is that I refused to pay the £15 per head per day that the hotel wanted for breakfast so I am curious to know if anyone with local knowledge knows if there is anywhere within walking distance of the hotel where we can get a good breakfast, or if there are shops within walking distance.
There are lots of resturants within walking distance of your hotel. Just head towards town and they will unfold before you like a big table cloth.
You are right not to pay £15 for breakfast!! You can eat great Thai food for a fraction of that. In fact that would last me two days and thats all my meals.
However you may not want to scrimp too much as its your holiday.
There are some great sea food resturants in the night market (see Hua Hin map) or on the sea front. Its just a question of taking your pick.
Good luck and have a great time. You lucky thing...
Jammy, we live right nearby and often go to Anantara for their buffet breakfasts!! They do a terrific buffet breakfast including Thai food and I think seafood ( We are going there for breakfast tomorrow in fact!!)
Sure you can get coffee and a bun somewhere down the street ( 7/11 just across the road) but hey . . .you are on vacation! Treat yourself . .at least once.
You have also picked what I feel is the prettiest hotel in town . .by far. Lovely setting, landscaping, gardens, beach area . ..pools and ponds that are just amazing.
They also just renovated their lounge and now have what I would say with confidence is the most beautiful such room in town . .stunning world class design. (I plan to take photos tomorrow when I go there for the breakfast buffet. ) Their dining room downstairs is also beautifully designed, elegant. . .and the chef (a personal friend) is world class. We ate dinner there just two weeks ago and had the Italian "tasting panel" menu . ..scrumptious!

15 smackers for breakfast !!!
Loads of places around where you can get a good breakfast (Thai, American, English, Danish - anything) for a couple of quid
£15 for breakfast does sound excessive. You say, "This is our second trip," so you should multiply that by at least 2. £30 pounds should be able to buy you Thai food for breakfast for a month.
OK, the setting might not be as pretty, but you've already paid for the hotel setting when you booked the room. IMHO the rest seems nothing other than pure profiteering.
Unlike Chas who should pay for the setting because he is an outsider wanting to enjoy the facilities you've already paid for.
If it were me, I might try the hotel breakfast once or twice, but I'd also like to get out of there and try a few other places.

Thats exactly what I do when traveling. ..and what I would do if I stayed at the Anantara for any length of time.
I dont think in pounds but that DOES seem too high. Perhaps there is a guest rate and a walkin rate . . but we pay 540 baht plus/plus per person.
Perhaps Jammy is already calculating for more than one person.
As well, we never eat lunch on a day we have a big breakfast so it covers two meals.

HMmmmmmm ....... it'll be interesting to hear from Jammy whether the £15 was per head or for the group. If it is per head, either his/her travel agent or the hotel is trying to seriously rip him/her off ie 540Baht equates to about £10 per head.
However, if it is £15 per head, I think Chas has answered the question - don't pay it.
I just had a look on their website and it is indeed 540 bt for breakfast.
Whilst that is more than I would pay for a breakfast in Hua Hin, it is actually a reasonable price for a good buffet breakfast in a quality hotel.
Brunches are real popular here in California, open from 9-2 generally and prices go from $15 to $55 per person. A lot of money, but lots of food.
We don't go often (3-4 times a year) but the one we like is high end but it fills me for the day (we go around 11-12) and our favorite also gives you an entree which we take away, so another meal for the next day.

Yes, agree that may be a reasonable price for a good buffet breakfast in a quality hotel. What I don't agree with is th 50% mark up by the travel agent.
How much extra is the travel agent charging for flights, accomodation and transfers?
The usual trick from the Antantara is to walk 100 yards down the beach to White Sands hotel. This may take you slightly longer in November as the beach is usually hidden under the sea, so you may have to take the inland route instead.
To clarify, we were going to be charged £15 per person per day for breakfast, hence my query, it's good to know that we will be able to get breakfast elsewhere.
