Christmas Tree

Post by PeteC »

Who among us with kids here is not going to put up a tree?

I ask as wondering if any of us with a mixed family has gone completely native, and basically ignores the holiday in terms of decorations, gift giving, big traditional dinner etc.

I tried last year to explain to mine what a manger scene is in reference to Christmas, and what the day is really all about. Fell on deaf ears due to the excitement. This year she's 4 and I'll try again. 8)

I don't want to push her or brainwash her concerning any religion, just to appreciate that if you celebrate Christmas, it goes a bit deeper than all the glitz and lights. Pete

FYI, this is an open thread by both title and location in 'expats'.

If anyone has advice as to where they're selling nice artificial trees in HH, you may want to list it here to help out those who don't know. When it comes to artificial trees, there are some real nice ones, and some real junk.

If anyone knows of any any fresh trees, let me know!!! :D  :D When I lived in Hawaii they used to come from the mainland in refrigerated freight containers, and cost about $20 per foot. If they imported them to here, probably $50 a foot. :( Pete

we do not have children either but always put up a tree and a few lights around the garden.

Ikea in Singapore always used to import real trees so maybe when they open in Bangkok they will offer the same service - they were not cheap in Singapore but...

The airport in Singapore always has real trees and wonderful Christmas displays from the beginning of December and it is lovely to walk into the departure lounge and "smell" Christmas. There is nothing like the smell of a real tree to bring back childhood memories.

Even when times were financially tough, after my divorce, I always would scrap up for a live tree for the kids (and the kid in me).

A artificial just isn't the same, I've lived enough in northern climates and love the smell of live pine.

Oh well, one more change when the move to Thailand happens.

Years ago we spent Christmas at the Dusit in Pattaya. The atrium there has half a rainforest in it at the best of times, but the Christmas tree they had was the size of a sequoia. Very impressive indeed.

Anyone know which hotel in HH will have the biggest on display?

And by the time they cleared customs we would be celebrating Jesus's death at Easter. :cuss:

We always had a tree in HH, one of those fibre optic ones we brought from UK and we have real ones in England. Ours goes up 3rd week in December, wouldn't be Christmas without one.

Brings back all those childhood memories. :thumb:

I just throw a few lights over the palms. Image

It would be nice to have a real Christmas Tree but I'm not the biggest fan anyway, just a good excuse to eat and drink for me.

I think this will be my 4th Xmas in Thailand and I can't say I miss the traditional English one.Image

I think that if things go to plan this will be my seventh Christmas in Thailand, but that has nothing to do with Santa Claus; it just so happens that the 25th of December is my partners birthday and I'm not allowed to miss that!

I've never done any decorations here, which is odd as I used to be really into it back in the states. I had thousands of dollars of decorations that I spent every weekend from Thanksgiving to Christmas installing then but I sold all that in my "moving to Thailand" garage sale and have never replaced any of it here. Here's a couple of photos from a Christmas in Florida (just to illustrate my point) :D

I did a rough count and I think I had just over eight thousand bulbs lighted on my best year. I was shooting for ten but every time I plugged in another string I blew a fuse. I already had extension cords running through windows to almost every room in the house trying to spread the load over several breakers.

I like the look of those house lights HHF. Kind of like icicles. Unique. :D Pete

The local councils in Perth, Australia, run competitions every Christmas for the best decorated house display. I do not have any photos, but they are very similar to yours, HHF.

hhf,
You certainly like running the old electricity bills up. Have you got shares in the companies?

That's a good idea Lomu; maybe I could recoup some of the money I spend on energy that way. If they pass "cap and trade" I hope it's not retroactive as I will probably have to pay a large carbon tax!
