Living expenses

Post by sibrown »

hi all, thanks very much for all the help and advice people on this site have so far given us and im just wondering if you can help us a little more.

We are a couple coming to Thailand in February for 4 months, we are just coming for a relaxing break and were advised of Hua Hin by someone who had visited before, by reading this site I've gathered Hua Hin isnt just a small little village so Im just hoping someone could help us with a few questions...

Where would be best to stay...somewhere cheap yet a decent apartment with access to a pool?

How much would we comfortably be able to live on per month between the two of us considering we just want a relaxing break and not a full on party holiday?

How do we get from Bangkok airport to Hua Hin?

Thanks for your help

As a general guide you should be able to live comfortably on a little less than you would spend at home - for things like food, drinks, utilities (if applicable) and local travel. If you cope OK at home you'll cope OK in HuaHin, and should be able to have a lot more meals out as well.
The problem is the cost of accomodation there these days. You're right - it isn't a little fishing village any more.
Check out the Accomodation threads on here first, and put out a plea for info. There might be expats who can help, or who know of reliable people with houses to rent. But be prepared to settle for a town house, or a smallish villa/bungalow on a development quite a way out of town.
The townhouses tend to be more central, with easier access to tuktuks, baht buses etc. Obviously they won't have pools (apart from a select development or two which are likely to be expensive) but having your own cooking facilities is a bonus.
Some developments, such as CondoChain, have a resident taxi driver on hand.
So allow for the cost of accommodation ON TOP of your budget back home. Probably anything from 10,000 to 20,000 per month up, with the higher end more likely. If you are required to be responsible for bills as well make sure you read meters. But be aware that the owner can bump up the bills (there is a thread on this somewhere way back.)
I can't advise on taxis from Swampy to HH as I never go straight there, but I'm sure others will help.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.
