The first part of the journey as you leave Bangkok can be interesting. Not scenic - but to see how people live in the shacks by the klongs is an eyeopener the first time. Then flat for ages. If you get the train late afternoon - say after about 3.30, it will be too dark to catch the more scenic bits towards HH. But with good timing the sunset over the range of hills on your right can be brilliant.

A word of caution re train travel.

The train to Hua Hin is of course a diesel train. However, the exhaust from the engines can be a little over powering. Remember the carriage windows will be open all the time so its best to get a seat as near to the back as possible so that you don't get the full effect of the fumes and dirt. Yes you'll end up with a dirty face after the journey, so don't wipe your forehead with your nice clean shirt.

Otherwise the trip is a nice one. Get the 09:20 train from Hualamboung (sp) which only goes to Hua Hin. You get to Hua Hin at about 1 pm.

I've done the Hua Lamphong to Hua Hin by train once.

A bit of a bone rattler and food was awful but apart from that well worth the experience, if only once.

The last time I did the trip - late 98 - the food wasn't bad at all. Alternatively there are always vendors hopping on and off selling snacks along the way

I always preferred the "Sprinter" that left BKK around 1:20. A fine lesiurely way to spend the afternoon and take in the sights. Vendors always seemed to offer better food than the bland stuff served by the official restaurant onboard.

I haven't taken the train for a few years now but used to quite enjoy it, as long as you are not in a hurry it's fine.

I've had some enjoyable trips - with Thai families wanting to share food with you.

It is different to the road trip -I like stations as well, some of the small ones are quite attractive

Yep I can certainly confirm that.
If it's any consolation the journey by road is near as dammit just as similar. :)
