Thai TV role models

Post by Spitfire »

I know we've done Thai TV before but I have been watching Thai TV (which usually doesn't happen too much these days) with the Mrs whilst on holiday, ie no UBC for a while :|, and my observation is that there are no credible male role models on Thai TV that constitute any kind of masculinity, perhaps with the exception of Carabou and his Red Bull ads.

We all know how much of a factor the TV plays a part in the average Thai's life.

All the women are pasty faced, vain and bimbo material that are hopelessly programmed into fashion, all the ads seem to advertise beauty products that will get you laid or make you better/admired than/by everone else if you buy them.

The men on TV are completely feminine, sorry to the PC brigade, but it's ridiculous, name some frequently appearing masuline male figures on Thai TV, there aren't, it's completely gay, yes, used that word, it's just true.

The soaps are full of guys that are 'handsome' and couldn't fight their way out a wet paper bag.

The other exception are the news readers which purposefully look like geeks, it's so transparently plastic sometimes.

Sorry, but had to have a quick rant about it. Any wonder there are so many confused kids around?

Sometimes I wonder how susceptable everyone must be to superficial input.

I know it shouldn't be a surprise but sometimes I'm stunned.

How can you really care what happens on tv when you can see what is going on in BKK. :?

That has it's own thread and is not the only one on this forum. What should I do, keep to the usual stuff like "Where's the nearest fresh water fountain to the Hilton?" or "Do you know where to buy a tooth pick?" Yawn, if you have nothing to add on a thread then don't post on it or be sanctimonious, you think that that news thread is the only thing to talk about?

I'll stop there, can't say much these days, not the same as a year or so ago. :|

Are threads such as these still allowed?

Indeed they are Spitfire.
I think most of us knows what goes on in Bangkok, without constantly watching foreign or Thai TV's coverage of the riots in Bangkok.

No need to shut this thread down.

I am not sure which TV Channel it is, but have you seen the "weather girl" on one of them?
Completely bland expression the whole time, turns her body and points with her hands like a wind up doll. But what really gets me with her hands is the way she holds them in a triangle shape in front of her crotch, and every so often she jerks them up and sort of flexes the triangle!
Bloody hilarious if you can stand to watch the rest of her performance!
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

Thats a bit unfair SF, you do get the odd stereotypical mafia boss and even the lads that look like manga cartoon characters occasionally pull a gun out and shout a bit.

When you get back home SF there's a new Thai Film channel on True. I think all packages have it down to Silver. To be honest I enjoy some of the older movies on there and most are good for a laugh. On there you'll see Thai movie heroes of the past and indeed, they put the current actors to shame.

They had a movie on last week I didn't know existed. About when US Forces were here during the Vietnam War. The theme was the GI's stealing all the Thai woman and how terrible and nasty we were. Filled with Thai strong men coming to the rescue of the distressed damsels in the clutches of the nasty Americans. Pete

Well done spitfire yes thank goodness there are those out there that actually have an opinion and are ready to, in the democratic spirit (had to throw that in) of dialogue discuss issues and not be brow beaten by PC nonces and horses hoofes. No wonder they have so many adds for "mens" hair cream.
Alf Garnet for PM!!
Yeah and I reckon the LOS has more than its fair share of transgender officianadoes (more power to them ha, ha). I personally cringe at 90% of Thai TV except for the Meuay Thai which tends to be more Meuay wrestling anyway.
I also blame English and European football telecasts which has "blokes" hugging and kissing each other and taking their gear off in public to show their scrawny physiques!

I can see your point SF; I'd like to see Clint Eastwood turn up and take on one of those angry Bangkok women that they seem to have in every Thai soap!
I know that Thais love them, but all those programmes are so similar that they may as well keep showing the same one.
To be fair to the Thais, I suppose their idea of the top male is the rich well dressed middle-aged fatcat sitting in his mansion and not someone who goes around getting dirty.

Thanks for the comments gents. I forgot to mention in the OP about the parading of physical freaks on the Tv to get laughed at, not sure what to make of that, bit uncomforting when you think about it but does assist the slapstick humour that prevails with the wizzes/pops and bang noises.

Here's a Thai movie and TV legend of the past. He fell from a helicopter in Jomtien, before Jomtien was really a place. Pete

You are absolutely right my man up until his death by falling from a Helicopter while shooting the end scenes of his movie. "My Father, mother, Aunt still remember him and consider him as a Thai TV Role model. So Sad that he had died such tragic circumstances.

For me as a froeign born Thai I never liked Thai soaps and Gameshows that much there are no real Thai Yv Role modles anymore. As SF says it rightly the Thai Male in the Entertainment biz, had been so feminized no wonder the bekome sexually confused. And SF is also right with his statement that News Anchors are made to look like Geek/Nerds and Newsjunkies. A perfect example wpould be Sutichai Yun from Nation Channel, Kiti Singhapat from News3miti.
