ATM & Banking System Shutdown

Post by chelsea »

Just wondered if anyone was experiencing problems with no ATM or banking services available especially in the Chiang Mai area.

I have a friend in Chiang Mai who I spoke with this morning and she said to me that she went to the ATM (SCB Bank) and that "all banks closed and no ATM service" and at present not sure when the system will open up again.

She only found out this morning about this happening and is not sure how long this will continue for.

Before anyone says this is the best sick buffalo story they have heard, I offered to send some to her and she said no good u send I cannot get it out.
So on that basis the story seems to stack up, that they are not working.

If there is anyone who reads this from Chiang Mai knows of an SCB ATM that is working can you let me know and I will pass it on

I'm pretty sure that I heard on BBC or Al Jazeera last night that ATMs were shutting down, but thought they were referring to BKK. Maybe it was Chiang Mai as well?
Sorry can't help as I'm not in Chiang Mai, but the story rings true if what I heard last night is correct.
As I have the princely sum of 170THB on me at the moment, I hope they're working in HH!!

Lomu, I think it would pay to check because from what she was saying it was all over, with no service until Monday by the looks.
They declared 20-21 May extra public holidays in BKK so banks not open anyway, but I saw nowhere that it would affect nationwide.
Up there apparently the whole system is down and from what I can make out, no debit/credit card payments are able to be made in shops/petrol stations etc either. Looks like I came back just in time.

As an aside, my local 7-11 ATM here in HH threw money at me a few moments ago, so all seems well here.
Thanks for the heads up, chelsea. We don't have to beg, borrow or steal this weekend. Hope the situation in CM gets sorted out.

That is good, only other thing to do would have been and started a weekend bar tab at JW's bar. I am sure he would not have minded. Sort of like a community service to you all from the local busineses in times of need

I went to Bangkok Bank's ATM at Petchakem Road (main office) this morning and tried to take out 20,000 baht but the machine only gave me 12,500 and in 500 baht notes. It appears the ATM popping up isn't working properly.

I read this morning somewhere that all banks are turning off ATM's machines during the curfew hours, which have now been adjusted to 2100-0500. Pete

I stopped receiving (daily balance) email alerts from Bank of Ayudaya for the last two days... I set them up over a year ago and they've never failed to come every day before so I assume their online banking and communications (which may come out of the main branch in Bangkok) has been disrupted.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
