Visa for Thai to travel to Europe from UK

Post by chopsticks »

Is it correct that a Thai spouse (resident in UK) can travel to EU countries without needing a visa if accompanied by her partner ?
Some sources say a Schengen visa is a requirement whereas others say it's not needed.

Definitely not. A Schengen Visa is required to visit countries covered by the Schengen treaty. Other countries such as France insist that you turn up at their UK (cattle market) Embassy. The only advantage you get is that the visa should be free.

It's been a few years since I last needed a visa for Mrs BB to vist Europe. I see the Schengen treaty has been extended http://www.axa-schengen.com/en/schengen-countries

I think you've got to get it from the country of your first port of call. You can then cross Schengen borders freely if you have the right medical insurance.

BB When my wife travelled to europe we landed in germany but the schengen visa was issued by the Greek embassy, they stamped the entry on the visa we then travelled to Greece and because it was an internal eu flight no checks were made on entry and that applied to my dog as well.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.

You're right - I did say it had been a while. I've done a bit more research, and they've changed the rules.

Thanks for the replies, the visa itself may be free (saving 60 Euros) and available by post from some other info I've just read.

Yes you do need a schengen visa for your wife and it needs to be applied for at the Embassy of the country in which you are due to spend most of your stay and not your port of entry.
My Thai wife and I entered Europe at Ijmuiden in the Netherlands as we were driving down to Greece through Germany, Switzerland and Italy but we had to apply to the Greek Embassy as that was where we were due to spend most of our time.
It is a much easier form to fill in than the UK visa form. Only two pages as opposed to about twenty!

You don’t even need to travel to the embassy in London to get the visa, but you can get it from any of the consulates which are spread all over UK.
This is for instance the list of the consulates of the Netherlands in UK:
