Migrants to UK will now require English test

Post by bapak »

People immigrating to Britain to join their spouses or partners will now be asked to prove that they can speak basic English under new rules. This is similiar to what several other countries, i.e. German and Netherland, have in place.

The UK Home Office says all migrants coming to Britain from outside the European Union will need to "show that their command of English is good enough to cope with everyday life before being granted a visa".

Home Secretary Teresa May was quoted as saying the new rule means tighter immigration - blocking as many 6,000 applicants a year - and it helps combat sham marriages.

The Learning Centre already have in place language courses for several EU countries and will shortly have a course for UK migrants that will meet the UK Home Office requirments. Inquiries: info@tlc-huahin.net

Is this the very basic beginners tuition or are you offering the full ESOL courses with tests externally certified and the school accredited ?
(These are part of the UK requirements for language tests to obtain permanent UK settlement).
The English language course also must have a Citizenship component.

What a bloody joke :banghead: the U.K is full of east european migrants with little or no english where i work in a container terminal we have signs in polish because there drivers jam the place up not understanding where to go.
These migrants also take away teacher time from the other children and make learning slower for the whole class.
A lot of british workers cant secure jobs because the migrants will work a lot cheaper.

Migration should be controled and managed for all coming here to the U.K

I feel quite bitter that we had to go through The Life In The U.K test just because i made a choice to marry a non EU national .

For all the east europeans they come here because this is the land of opertunity and good conditions i.e NHS housing.

I think the home Office is full of hypocrisy. :guns:

Thanks Bapak

The test announced yesterday seems to be a very simple one requiring just a few phrases and words along the lines of 'How much is this ?', 'Where is the bus-stop ?' etc.

Maybe includes 'Where is the benefit office ? '

The new requirement will be introduced by way of changes to the Immigration Rules in Autumn 2010. It will affect non-EEA nationals applying to come to or stay in the UK as a:
spouse or civil partner
fiancé or proposed civil partner
unmarried partner or same sex partner of a British citizen or permanent resident.
Under the new rules, applicants will have to demonstrate English at A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference, the equivalent of Entry Level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework.

A1 is consistent with practice in other EU countries. It requires learners to demonstrate a basic command of conversational English, currently the same as the level required for skilled workers admitted under Tier 2 of the Points Based System.

As is suggested above, it will be consistent with practice in other EU countries. The Learning Centre has the German and Netherlands test and as "chopsticks" says above, it is very basic english.

I'm nipping over to France Richard, jumping on a lorry and coming back to claim asylum, maybe if I speak in broken English, I can get them there perks.
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

First off I thought it was a comment on my English (I'm not arguing, just surprised you could surmise from my posts).

We have the same problem here where you get drivers tests in multi languages, most answering phones start with "Press 1 for English"

California is especially hard hit with it's proximity to Mexico and need for agricultural workers that most US citizens don't want to do.

Arizona just passed a state law where police are to ask for proof of citizenship where warranted and the protests that have sprung up are amazing.

Cities like Los Angeles saying they will no longer do business with Arizona companies, etc.

I take much of the Falang/Thai price differences, etc in stride after seeing how the educated first world acts sometimes.

Forget amazing Thailand, this is amazing USA.
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

Well, aside from the fact a refugee and an immigrant are not neccessarily the same thing, pretty much everything else is drivel. No source to the figures I see - is there any need to say more? No disrespect Richard, but you don't really believe this stuff, do you?

As for the new English languauge skills needed to even get an SV, I believe the other English skills will still be a requirement once on the other side! I guess this will be a new business opportunity everywhere - anyone thinking of relocating to Pakistan?

Yes I'm sorry Richard those figures (certainly the ones re British pensions) are incorrect. In fact there is no longer a 'dependant addition' to the State Pension anyway. I've got a pretty good idea where the info came from, and have already replied to Dennis about it - although I do realise that he only forwarded the message in good faith.

But does anyone know if this new requirement will apply only to new immigrants - or will it be retrospective, to include immigrants already settled in the UK?

And on the subject of migrant workers. Yesterday I noticed a van parked near my local in Hull. Clearly Danish, and signed up as a company vehicle. As the pub landlady is Danish (not that you would know it as her English is almost native) I asked her about the van. Guess what - it's a crew of Danish bridge builders working in the area.
Now - I know the Danes are renowned for their bridges. They have quite a lot of them after all. But it was still quite a surprise to find that we need to import people to do this type of work.
It's either yet another EU deal, or the UK genuinely doesn't have people with the necessary skills, and I know which one of those options I find the most disturbing.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

From Autumn 2010 all non-European migrants will have to demonstrate a basic command of English that allows them to cope with everyday life before they are granted a visa.

The new law is not retrospective.... and applies both to application made in inside and outside the UK.

Yes Mags my posting was fired from the hip with no stats to verify it

I agree. Many postings are hearsay and the information is sometimes distorted but the general message behind the theme is disturbing and I think people should think about it more and not sweep it under the carpet

Many give up. I know many people who say 'well it's the way it is and it's what our government has imposed upon us so there is little we can do'

I expected the protests would be reflected in the ballot boxes but it wasn't

Richard that was a staged-invasion...so they could ship-out all them Lada cars from under your nose :-)

Here's one for you, cos I'm unable to work, whenever I ring the Works & Pensions Dept. the
automated voice kicks in & gives me 2 options...
"Press 1 for English language"..."Press 2 for Welsh" Excuse me,but surely the Welsh understand English..?
(They only speak their lingo when Brits go into their pubs/shops anyway!)

What is the percentage of non-EU immigrants trying to gain entry to UK? If the new test & all its related red-tape,new jobs for civil-service relatives, funding etc is only for a tiny %,whats the point?..when as Kendo said earlier..its the Eastern-block EU people that are flooding us,not Thai ladies supported by sponsors.
(Anything the government do now is 5-7yrs to late..its like going to the toilet AFTER you've wet the bed)
