Thailand, one of the 5 most dangerous honeymoon spots

Post by migrant »

Below was posted on AOL as one of their lead stories for honeymooners from the States.

Number 5 after Mexico (drug wars), Jamaica (gun battles), Australia (poisonous spiders (what are those honemooners doing??)) and Indonesia (kidnapping and terrorists).
5. Thailand: Riots and Terrorist Attacks

"For Better: One of most popular honeymoon destinations according to the wedding gurus at TheKnot.com. Top places to spend your first vacation together as a married couples include northern Chiang Mai-with its hot springs and caves-and the famed islands of Phuket, and Ko Samet.

For Worse: Bloody political riots gripped Bangkok in the spring of 2010, cutting off honeymoon-worthy hotels like the Four Seasons and destroying shops and theaters in the capital city. Unfortunately, this is not a new problem in Thailand. The State Department noted that it was "concerned" about the continuing risk of terrorism in Thailand in 2009 in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. It warned of separatist group attacks and urged U.S. citizens not to travel to the far south of the country or to the Cambodian, Lao, or Burmese borders. The Thai government also declared a state of emergency in 24 provinces. To be safe choose a romantic resort far from this action."

They do like to 'ham up' the drama though. Most tourists are easily scared unless they've been here, or places like it, before and had a good look around. I suppose it's the conditioning factor they are bombarded with by the media/governments where they come from.

Talking to people here in Europe, the problem is that they're not actually scared of coming to Thailand, they just don't want to have their holidays spoilt.
The main concerns are just transport disruptions and things of that nature.
What you have to realize is that there is an almost endless choice of exotic holidays available and it's very easy to just choose somewhere else that isn't going through upheaval at the moment, particularly for a honeymoon.

Yeah Steve, OK, fair play. I guess that what I was getting at was that unless you were in certain areas of BBK during these events then almost nothing was interfered with or disrupted, a few dramas in the provinces, apart from a few road blocks etc which are highly visible and so on but easy to avoid, but little was actually a huge problem. The curfew, which was only really in the northeast and the north plus parts of Bangkok, was a bit surreal to be honest but appeared dramatic.

However, you are quite right about alternative destinations and the upheaval factor or threat thereof it.

Things like that scare off the first-timers but unfortunately they are a big part of the market.

My ex is Korean. Years ago there were student protests in Korea. When you watched the news here in the states it sounded like the whole country was up in flames.

My ex was worried so we called her Aunt who lived in the area of the greatest protests.

We asked if she is OK because of all the riots, she said "no problem, I just drive around the block"

Typical media exageration. just like government web sites giving warnings of danger in Thailand.

Why doesn't the Thai government web site start giving warnings about visiting the following:
Britain - Bombings in Ireland and London, extreme threat of terrorism, high levels of personal crime, not to mention the terrible weather and cost of living.
United States of America - extreme threat of terrorism, high levels of personal crime, excessive drug use and related crime, include drug wars. Seever economic depression which could result in your money being worth nothing during your time in country. Extreme risk of being ripped off by banks, insurance companies, and for medical treatment.

get a life, use some common sense and the world is relatively safe wherever you go.

If you read this forum you would think Hua Hin is a gun toting ferrang shooting gallery at the moment. Filled with convicts, murderers and rogue property dealers on the run from the UK.

Could somebody tell Khundon1975 his avatar, being a red-back spider (Lactrodectus hasselti), is scaring away honeymooners from the forum who should be busy anyway. I think being a pedestrian in Bangkok is more dangerous than a spider risk.
So Bogota, Kabul, Mexico, Kingston, are out. Big chance for Blackpool to muscle in on the market.

The FA world cup is setting the trend for more adventurous destinations, Jo-burg, Rio De Janerio. Honeymooners to follow or combine events?

Don't believe everything in the media. I was in Savu Savu during the coup in Fiji. The "rebels" came down from the villages, "overtook" the police station of the two policemen and drank kava together in front of the police station all day. The "rebels" went back to their villages at sunset. What a coup experience that was! :D :D :D

I think the danger is in taking the wife........................or getting caught by her!

I think marriage is the most dangerous, just by itself!!

It certainly seems to be, if certain local recent events involving Thai wives are not to be repeated.
