Twisted Logic

It may be a good idea if some of these "greenies" were to start taking care of what they already have, rather than jumping on a bandwagon that they know nothing about.

Of course, it is much easier for the authiorities to fine some hapless tourist 2,000 Baht, than to have and enforce pollution laws! :banghead:

The above article mentions the possibility of the Koh Samui area being used for oil exploration. From what I've heard from friends who have recently visited the island it probably would be a distinct improvement.

Hapless tourists don't pay tea money - the only way to extort cash from them is through fines.
It may be rubbish - but by golly it's British rubbish.

I have just been to Koh Samui for a week or so. It has some nice attractions, but like a lot of tourist places in Thailand, the infrastructure has not kept up with the rapid expansion. The place I stayed at has not had any government water supply for the past 4 months. There are regular power outages that do not seem to be related to anything such as rain, or time of day. The ring road is a typical Thai disaster: narrow, winding and totally inadequate for the traffic it is carrying.

I drove down there and used the car ferry. It is reasonably well organised, but the ferry we went over on is an antiquated disgrace. The thing had a permanent list to one side, which nobody seemed too concerned about. The return ferry was old but had been refurbished in the passenger areas.

Like most island resorts around the world, everything from toothpaste to fuel, costs more than the mainland. The big supermarkets are all there, BigC, Tesco, Makro. There are several "International" Hospitals. There is a new terminal for the high speed ferries that run to the smaller islands, which looked like it had only recently been opened and has good facilities. The privately owned airport appeared to be adequate, but I did not go inside the terminal.

In all, probably a nice place to visit if you just want to stay in a resort on the beach, but not really a place that I would go to again, or consider retiring too.

Ah, but when you are enroute to the island, the list is towards the mainland; and when you leave the island it lists away from the mainland. So it all balances out in the end... :thumb: See?

Stayed on the island for six months in 97/98 and it was really quite a nice place to live. However, I've been back several times and now I don't intend going back again. Far too much development, and as has been pointed out, the infrastructure is a joke. Koh Pang ngang (or whatever it's called) is now a far better destination, but that's largely due to the fact that there's no airport. All in all, it's a lovely little island, and if you want a quiet time, simply avoid the full moon party area.

Well said. These would be the same "greenies" that pour their used cooking oil into klongs and etc.

I was once fined 500 baht for flicking my cigarette butt in the road, and fair enough, I shouldn't have done it, so I suppose I deserved the fine. Then, after handing over the money, I hung around for a while to observe. I can't even say how many people I saw throwing packets down, but yet they were not fined. I did see a Thai get fined for throwing a cigarette butt, so I can only think it's the cigarette butts which are the problem, while plastic carriers and packets are simply part of the country's heritage.

Old buses and other vehicles belching out black smoke contribute far more to the problem of pollution that what drilling rigs do. In fact, a mate of mine often works on the rigs here in Thailand, and he reckons they are far stricter than many other countries he's worked in, including the UK. There's no way oil exploration in the gulf will affect tourism on Samui, and neither will it result in pollution which is any worse than they already have. I think the problem is that the government hasn't done much to educate the residents regarding this matter, and of course most would have been watching the coverage relating to to Gulf of Mexico spill.

I can imagine that a leak like the one in the Gulf of Mexico might have a bit of a negative effect on the place, which is probably what the locals are worried about.

Yeap takiab, the litter that comes out of cars, from pedestrians and from small businesses is a right eye opener - even from people who seem well dressed. I sometimes walk around with paper looking for a dust bin to no avail and on several occasions taken it home. No wonder the Thais adopt a NIMBY/jettison attitude and yes there will always be someone of lower rank to clean up after them.
Keep LOS beautiful - nice concept.
