Post by kendo »

When we leave Hua Hin in January my wife and family want a days shopping in Bangkok before we fly up to Issan so my first qestion........
We normally stay in a small hotel in a side soi off Indra square, near to the sky hotel i think this area is called Ratchaprarop, was this are affected by the unrest early this year and are there still issues regarding this.

Also can anyone recommend a good night life area for good food and some evening entertainment, and before i get any tonge in cheek reply's i am with the family and my pregnant wife, so obviously not Nana or Patpong.

Kendo.

Not sure what kind of night life you prefer. One rather nice area (at least used to be) was Sukhumvit Soi 22, Queen's Park Night Plaza. Bars similar to Hua Hin's but some with aircon. Some have girls but not all, pool and darts all over the place. There are some restaurants on the soi and sub-sois as well as along Sukhumvit in that area. Larry's Dive, Dubliners, Londoner, D'Pelican Inn etc. Also if you walk your way from the Phrom Phrong skytrain station (in front of Emporium shopping centre, the missus will probably like this) towards the beginning of Sukhumvit, there are nice pubs and restaurants to be visited. Soi 33 has hostess bars but they won't bother you (in most cases) unless you call for them. These last mentioned aren't cheap places, though.

Definitely Sukhumvit for me too. I always stay at what used to be a small place off Soi 11 - AW Business Inn. Now not so small - they have a new hotel backing onto the original which opens directly onto Soi 11. Twin aircon ensuite rooms from about 700. Clean but scruffy now in the original buildings but very friendly staff and 24 hour restaurant plus tour/travel office. There is also the Swiss Park Hotel and the Ambassador nearby if you want plush!

What we had in mind was to have a good meal in a place that has a decent house band not to loud.

The Rajprarop area was affected by the "Red Shirt Shenanigans" back in May, but it has now returned to normal. If you are happy with the place where you normally stay there is no need to look for pastures new.

If you continue further north on Rajprarop; over the railway, under the new Airport Link, and straight on at the traffic lights you will come to Soi Rangnam on the left. In this soi you will find a number of restaurants some of which have live bands, and which are perfectly suited to a night out with your partner.

Maybe more informal than you are looking for, but I justmentioned onPete's BKK thread, the night bazaar by Lumphini (suan Lum??).

It's a large stage with seating in the middle. Booths of various food and drink are all around it.

Lot's of good food and drink choices!!

There's also a nice looking restaurant just into Soi 11 - on the left going from Sukhumvit and just before Cheap Charlies.
I can't remember the name - and it might be a bit pricey - but set back in a walled garden. I think they have live music. Has anyone tried it? Would appreciate feed back for own use anyway.

The Suan Lum night bazaar has closed Pete. I think that land became too valuable and they are going to build something else (probably high rise condos overlooking Lumpini park) there.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

See the "48 Hour in Bangkok" thread HHF. Conflicting info per Nereus's post. Pete
Nereus wrote:The night bazzar has been closed for some time, but I am not sure about the food court. The nearest BTS is Silom, (Sala Daeng) and the MRT is Lumphini, which is right at the entrance.

edit: According to the following it is still operating. The Ferris wheel has gone for sure, and I know that the plan was to close it as the land owner had some big plan in store for the site.

Hi Pete, we rode past in a taxi earlier this month and it looked closed but maybe it's just been scaled down from what it used to be in preparation for closing later.

The music and food venue near the bazaar that we went to last year had been improved since my previous visit.

It was far enough away from the bazaar that, perhaps, it was spared.

I'm not sure if they have music every night but our favorite Thai restaurant in Bangkok for a "lomantic" night out is Kinnaree on Sukhumvit Soi 8 (beside the Nana BTS stop). It is a "Royal Thai" restaurant that serves very fancy Thai dishes, some I've never seen anywhere else. It is expensive for Thai restaurants, but the food, service, and ambiance is unmatched imo in other Thai restaurants I've been to. The last time I was there in the evening they had a very good singer providing soft dinner music as well.

BTS to Nana station, walk a couple of hundred meters down Soi 8 and look for the sign on the left hand side. It is in an old Thai house and you can't see the structure from the road, only the sign. You walk a lighted driveway to get to the restaurant.

Here's the website:

I've eaten there for lunch and noticed a few tourists wearing shorts...was not a problem. I met one of the owners on that occasion and she's a very pleasant lady. I don't think she would be overly fussy on the dress code.
