OK ~ Now the train . . . from Bangkok to . . .

Post by songkurai »

Anyone have information about taking the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin?

Yes, I have visited the Thai Railways website. Yes there are trains.

But has anyone had any experience taking the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin and from Hua Hin to Bangkok?

Your previous post on another thread asked how to get to Hua Hin from Bangkok airport.

Okay, assuming you're not spending any time in Bangkok, depends on your budget but the taxi option is the quickest and easiest way to go.

There's no point looking at the train option as you'll have to go into BKK via a taxi and the train service will be slow and take hours to get to Hua Hin.

If your budget does not allow for a taxi, follow the previous instructions and get yourself to Victory Monument. If you have a big bag/suitcase (assume you will have if you've just arrived) buy two tickets (one for you, one for the bag - 280 baht) and take the mini bus....as per previous posts.

Trains in Thailand are slow....very slow.

I have taken the train a few times, but I prefer the regular (VIP - or 1st class) bus. Its really simple too! All you have to do when you land at BKK International is approach a taxi and say "Bai Sai Dai Mai". They will take you to the Southern Bus Station. Go to booth 8 and buy a ticket for Hua Hin. The bus leaves just about every 40 minutes or so. The entire trip from Sai Dai Mai to Hua Hin takes about 3.5 hours, but of course that varies a bit. You pay about 140 baht and they take care of your luggage too.

I forgot to add in my last post...the trains are very slow, but they do offer some amazing scenery. I would suggest taking it at least once just for the experience. It may not be the most comfortable (or aromatic) trip though. :)

Thank you.

Actually, I have not made up my mind as to transportation. But, as I have said in other posts, I would like to take train once, just for scenery.
That is why I asked about train from Bangkok to Hua Hin and Hua Hin to Bangkok.

This trip to Thailand is very leisurely. I got the time for the train.

And as I have said before: It is not the destination but the journey that is important to me.

Do you get it? I mean, do you really get it? :lach:

Train to Hua Hin

Post by kuki »

I recently took the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin and found it to be really good.Excellent scenery and if you get a seat in the buffet car theres beer and Thai chat to see you through the 4 hour journey.
Did the taxi also and its much more uncomfortable except for the Karaoke DVD playing at full blast to sing along to.
Also the train only costs 104 baht whereas a taxi was closer 1700baht.

I took the train from Hua Hin to Bangkok and back to Hua Hin last May.
The trip to Bangkok was quite an experience; third class, full with the local Thai people, travelling or vending food. The train stopped at every station.
It was absolutely great, but a bit too long; after 5 hours my body was aching everywhere. It was worth it though.
On my way back I took the second class, which was very different, airconditioned and more comfortable. Less interesting though.

I get it. I did BKK - HH by unicycle once. I got a sore arse and didn't see much countryside from under my suitcase but I still beat the train!

If you have to take the train because of the rail transportation type and the scenery option, then take the night train to Chiang Mai (12 hours) and enjoy the unique Thaï hospitality there. Try to go away from the farang hours on Songkran and Xmas periods and I can guaranty you a lovely time with a good book, a Mekong bottle and/or a nice encounter on the train ...

For Hua Hin, try to get the local bus, it's quick enough and pretty "exotic" enough too .

Train to Bangkok

Post by Terry »

Not quite the same journey, but for those interested in a rail trip with a little difference try BKK to KL (or vice versa) by train.

I did KL to BKK late '98 when the missus was about to give birth to sprog No 1 and the plane was not an option.

Travelled KTM 1st class from K.L. 07.00 to Bhukit Mertajam 12.45 - changed to SRT Thai 2nd class sleeper 13.00 arrived BKK 10.00 next day.
Cost GBP 25 each (then) - real value for money. Needless to say the Thai section of the trip was more enjoyable with the hawkers on the train .

Whilst in B.M. the 'Eastern and Oriental' passed by with the hooray henry's on board at U.S.D. 2,000 a ticket for the same scenery and same track.

The sleeper stopped at Hua Hin around 06.00 just as the sun was coming up and although I had been to Hua Hin many times already, it was this event that made my mind up to live here.

Moved here Jan 2000 and can still sometimes hear the trains in the early morning - brings back memories.
