Are the Russians coming to Hua Hin?

Post by richard »

I notice that 'Room to Room' have signs outside now in Russian and quite often a pickup is parked outside with Russian writing on the side. Are they Russian owned or just agents?

Inevitably.......yes, probably.......for better or worse and there will definitely be a diverse set of opinions on whether that is good or not for HH. I suppose it's a rhetorical question as to whether HH gets swallowed up in the same fashion as other places, guess it's natural. Those that will benefit from this situation are those that bought land a decade ago and that'll be a small silver lining for some. However, there will be those that believe anywhere should just sell it's soul to commercialism/tourism etc.

You'll be able to tell though that the Ruskies are really around when they start selling decent vodka in bars, supermarkets start stocking a wide variety of Addidas sports tracksuits with hoods and the food section has fresh beetroot all the time.

However, whether this side of the 'pond' should resemble the other side is up for debate imo. Suppose it's the contagion factor, I guess.

Other things to watch for are black Hummer H2s and Mercs with blacked out windows and extra chrome, sudden increases in the number of gold finish dolphin taps and sink accessories sold at HomePro, bars suddenly swapping annoying euro hi beat music and rap for even more annoying balalaika spliced Russian hi beat and rap or endless loops of TaTu, and a sudden drastic increase in the number of heavily tatooed young males "falling off" balconies.

Dead young Ukranian girls in deckchairs on the beach discovered at sunup are an optional extra with your Patayya Hell regional development deal.

Just remember the key phrase....Zdrastoytye Ivan!

Fresh beetroot was - to the best of my knowledge - introduced to HH about 9 years ago when that great little farm foods shop opened opposite the Tessabahn. Sadly that shop has gone now, and the long anticipated Russian invasion continues to creep in.
I noticed it last year, and it was discussed on the forum well before that.
Hopefully HuaHins' connections will keep a full scale invasion at bay for a while at least. No-one wants to see HH turn into another Patters - where there have been mega problems with Russian prostitutes. But - there is also a historical connection between Thailand and Russia so who knows?

The shop you are talking about Mags opposite the Teeabahn is Mini Farm and it is now on Soi 88 just over the railway line and yes it does have fresh beetroot some of the time.
