Hard disk data storage

Post by richard »

Well as some well known poster mentioned recently, data downloads are getting bigger. So what do you gurus recommend in terms of storage?

I currently have 500 gig on my laptop and 3 remote tetra gig drives and with cross backups my capacity is dwindling

My data is basically personal, music, pictures and movies (Sandmans fault)

Shall I go out and buy an IBM 360 or an ICL 1906A?

Why don't you go and purchase a WD (Western Digital) 3 TB hard disk?
MB is just not the question if you want something as serious as a back up,because now we're talking about TB, yes Terra Bytes.
The WD has more than enough capacity to back up your worn out HD a quadruple a of times!

You can get them here but I am afraid to mention the "It" place as it is not a sponsor ;)

I mentioned this before but can't seem to find it or remember if I got a satisfactory answer or not.

I have an old desktop running XP pro using FAT32 file system (because it is a dual boot system also running ME and sharing files). I also have a netbook running Windows 7 using an NTFS file system.

Can I use a large external USB hard drive to move, backup, and view files from both systems or do I have to use two drives (one for each file system) or partition one so that it has an area using each file system (if that is even possible)?

I recommend keeping your drives small in case of loss ie...1TB each.

If you can run to it get a NAS storage system. In the long run it may be best.

You can very easily order stuff from Thanni.

http://www.thanni.com/index.php?main_pa ... 20a&page=3

5 980 THB

Same in Banana-IT net order:

Thanni is a very good site for getting real (not inflated) hardware prices in Thailand.

I'd agree with RC's point at keeping hard disks small, ie 2x1Tb instead of 1x2Tb, better for backup purposes.

Regarding XP, it cant recognise anything above 2.1Tb, I believe FAT32 won't read/copy files larger than 4Gb either.

Thanks Buksi, so the question remaining is can an external USB hard drive (formatted to NTFS, I assume) be used to copy files to/from the XP FAT32 system provided the file sizes are within the XP FAT limits?

Yes, you should have no problems doing that, I often copy across multiple operating systems and computers with no worries - the older, slower ones you need to leave for a while and go and have a cuppa while the files are copying.
