Verdict on the new Chang Export beer

Post by Spitfire »

I don't know exactly how long it's been out but can't be that long as I've only recently just started seeing it in shops. It's 5% as opposed to the 6.4% of 'Classic', 5% of the 'Draught' and 4% of the 'Light' versions.

I really like it, especially for daytime drinking as the 'Classic' is a bit vicious in the daylight hours and the 'Light' seems to have an after-taste for me that puts me off.

Where in the UK can you buy Chang Beer ?
Major supermarkets and off licences do not seem to sell it or know of it .
Seems strange as they are a major sponsor here , Everton football club .

Oriental supermarkets sell it. You also see it in the foreign beer section of supermarkets here in the Bristol area - normally alongside the Singha.

Tasted it for the first time today SF. Saw in in Macro the other day - it's more expensive than Chang Classic, so being married to a Scot and liking to stick with what we know, we didn't buy it.

Went to a newly found watering hole today (as they sell Chang Classic) and they'd run out. How about Chang Export? OK, we'll give it a go. It's okayish. Nicer than light, but doesn't have the richness of taste that Classic has. More of (as you said) an afternoon session beer. We had a couple of bottles and decided to go home for the 'real' stuff.

VS
P.S. It was 49 baht for a large bottle, as opposed to 45 baht for Classic.

Yes, on the continent those "Chinese" supermarkets all sell it including the one here that has the unfortunate name of "Man Goo"!

I agree with Big Boy! Until recently it was restricted, as far as I could tell, to oriental supermarkets and Thai shops, certainly the ones I have frequented in the West & SW London areas, who all stocked it. But Tesco now stock it, next to Singha and if memory serves me right, Sainsbury's do as well. I was in Waitrose yesterday and they don't!

I have tried Chang Export both in cans and in large bottles. I do like the malty taste and pretend
to notice a different taste in cans and in bottles to the benefit of can. Since there no longer is the:

to be had, anything else is just ersatz for the real stuff.

Quite like it, especially if drinking during daylight hours. Also noticed it doesn't cause you to wake up with a foggy mind as does the classic. Still like the classic though, but now buy the export as well.

In my local mom and pop shop tins are 27 rather than 25 baht, while bottles are 47 instead of 42 baht.

I'm with VS, the flavor of Chang Classic is the best imo of any Thai beer. It has more flavor than the others (as well as more alcohol). I haven't seen/tried the export yet, but I definitely like the classic better than the draft (canned/bottled), or lite, or Sing, or Leo.

If headed into a long drinking session (knowingly) I may drink Heineken or even Leo instead though if I want to do anything other than nurse a hangover the next day.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Might just give it a try on our next visit, but suspect I'll stick with my ''tight@rse priced'' Archa  ........ decent beer IMHO.

On where to buy in the UK, ''Majestic Wine'' always used to have a fairly decent selection of imported beers.
