Working in a Restaurant. Advice sought.

Have a young Thai friend who speaks pretty good English and wants to work in a restaurant or Hotel. She doesn't have a 'paper', which I assume is an educational qualification, so it's more likely to be a restaurant.

I'd like to know what the specific responsibilities are... pay, hours, holiday. And how restaurants deal with overtime and tips. Are hours set or whatever the restaurant needs? Do waitresses just tend tables or are they expected to carry out other tasks such as cleaning floors, windows, fans etc..?

I realize there may be differences between restaurants but perhaps an owner will read this and answer.

MrPlum, all the questions you asked about restaurant staff depend on the restaurant as you suggested. Terrace 90 was hiring not long ago. Maybe you should go talk to them as they are one of the places that treats their staff well and pays them better than most (they keep and split the tips among the staff too). Many of their staff have been with them for 5? years ever since they opened the first restaurant downtown so it must be an ok place to work.

Also you could lend her your motorbike (if she doesn't already have one), and she could go around the restaurants and find out for herself.

If she is keen to work, then I'm sure she'll be eager to find out all the details, and which is the best arrangement for her.

I very much agree with hhfarang here. It's quite a lottery when it comes to working conditions in a restaurant here, i.e. is it regular or casual employment, so are employer and employee paying social insurance contributions, etc.

I concur that Terrace 90 would be an ideal place to start looking for a job in this case.
