Age differences in Hua Hin

Post by alligator1999 »

A fairly straight forward and up front question for all you expats that have dedided to make Hua Hin your home...

A large party of us Brits recently visited Hua Hin and stayed there for a week, while on a holiday in Southern Thailand. We had heard that Hua Hin did contain a limited amount of girlie bars, so we anticipated the sights of the wall to wall bars (some very "girlie") opposite the Hilton Hotel.

But HOW do you guys sit comfortably with the fact that you have the constant sight of guys aged 40 plus (some seemed to be over sixty!) walking around your town with "young Thai girls" (some looking far below the legal age for sex) hand in hand and apparently acting as this is the norm!

[ Edited by Admin ] Some of us were out there as we were seriously thinking about moving out to Hua Hin - none of us are old fogies or prudes but few of us are quite so enthusiastic about the idea now!

We could only come to the obvious conclusion that these "men" (and I use term loosely) have come to Thailand to exploit these young girls for one of only three reasons:

A. They are so ugly and/or such complete bastards to women in their own country that they had no chance of forming a long lasting relationship with any self respecting woman there.

B. They are with these naive Thai girls for what they may perceive as a way to purchase property/businesses in LOS. (Often way of the mark there - they should study Thailands law about land ownership a bit more!!!)

[ edited by Admin ]

Come on guys, surely some of you expats find this distasteful at the very least.

So why don't you do something about it?

It is of no benefit to anyone, let alone the exploited, to say TIT!

Why do you talk, associate or in fact have anything to do with these perverts at all!

Do you honestly think that turning a 'blind eye' to this sort of behaviour is ultimately going to benefit Thailand or YOU come to that!

Are you happy to be living in the land of perverts (it should be known as LOP not LOS!) because that is what it is begining to become known as! Which is such a shame.

Has anyone got the balls to stand up against these sort of guys and tell these pervs that they are NOT welcome in Hua Hin???

I will be interested to see what replies I get to this posting...

That's quite a rant for your first post. There was a long thread on age differences recently.
Firstly, HH tends to attract a more elderly tourist base. Younger partygoers head for the islands, in the main.
Thailand is not the haven it once was for creeps looking for underage partners and HH is certainly not as bad as other more infamous resorts.
A lot of us don't like to see the archetypal 65 year old with a 19 yr old girl, but it's not against the law. There's not a lot anyone can do.
As far as the allegation of paedoplia is concerned, I've not seen it. The police take a very dim view of those who engage in this, as recent prosecutions and deportations in the country have shown.
I'm 47, my wife is 34. How would you classify that relationship?
Nobody wants young girls exploited, but if things are legal, what would you suggest?
Don't forget that Thais can look a lot younger than their actual years.
Furthermore, if said 65 yr old man settles down anywhere in Thailand with their 19 year old honey, I know who'd I'd put my money on coming out of it all quids up. So, who's exploiting who?

I have to agree with most of what you have said but have to point out a few things.

The local police will move in if they get information on any underage activity here. The punter will be liable for prosecution and the prostitute will be moved on.

A lot of Thai girls look a lot younger than they are and indeed many farangs that have abused themselves with drugs and alchohol look older.

These girls that you see with old men are mostly prostitutes. Prostitutes do what they do for one purpose only, to make money. They do not care about the age of the client or what he looks like. In fact some prefer the older ones because they can get more money and less grief.

As for legitmate couples like Lomu and his wife, no reasonably minded farang or Thai would ever think twice or give a second look. The age difference in my marriage is even greater.

I think it would be a good idea to move this topic to relationships, I have a feeling it may generate more input.

Not to mix apples with oranges, but my hometown in America was recently criticized over its high per capita rate of sex offenders. Of a town of roughly 8000, the number of offenders was around 20-35. These people disgust me. They deliberately take advantage of people who do not have the capacity to realize the severity of their actions. However, these people are not exclusive to my hometown.

When you see these things happen in Thailand (which may be at times "less-than-discreet", it does not necessarily mean that these places are worse than where you are living right now. Everywhere has its share of perverts, ugly folk, and parasites. And to be honest, I would rather people with a sexual disfunction do their business on a consenting person who is being compensated than on a child or other defenseless member of society.

When you say "Why do you talk, associate or in fact have anything to do with these perverts at all!", I get the feeling that you think people who use this forum are condoning actions you think are vulgar. At the same time, you (someone who has visited the town once from the sound of your post) are asking people who have made this town their home to change what is essentially a part of society that spawns anywhere there is a major discrepancy in income. This is beyond any single person's control. In any case, I would imagine it is almost exclusively the doing of tourists than people who choose to make this their home.

Whether or not you choose to agree with me or not, let me just point out one key part of your post....

"these naive Thai girls"

...now please read Bill's first post in the following section of the forum (should be about 15th or so down) and tell me who is really being exploited:

Some element of truth here!

I can’t say that I agree with everything that Alligator1999 says but I do strongly agree that any man who chooses to marry or even have sex with a girl that looks underage [ edited by Admin ]

Just for the record.
This is a very serious and sensitive subject. Alligator posted exactly the same thread on another forum board as well. That thread has been closed.
Please refer to the forum rules when replying or this thread will be closed as well.

When we first met up I was 40 and my wife was 27. Does that qaliify me for entry into the persons to be perverted, expelled, exterminated group?

I had the same feeling, until I met my angel and start to view things in a complete different way. Not better nor worst. Just different.
And now, I leave my Westener way of thinking before entering the Land of Smile. Forget that and you can waste your holidays.

Oh, I'm 40 and she's 31 next month 8)

Are we getting this out of context?

Oh dear!

I must admit that I find the way this thread is going rather bemusing – everyone seems to be getting very, very defensive about their own relationships because one person or group of people has had the ‘audacity’ to come out and say what the vast majority of Westerners would think! (given my understanding of what Alligator is trying to say).

To Iomuamart who is 47 together with a 34 year old? IMHO I don’t think there is any comparison to what either Alligator said or my brief reply to this posting. There are many, many happy couples of these ages (and indeed with a far greater age difference) living in the UK and elsewhere with no problems or stigma attached to them whatsoever (may you enjoy a long and happy relationship).

Similarly to Jimiherf, who is 40 in a partnership with a 31 year old – nothing unusual or any way distasteful about that situation.

And again to Gaijin, him 40 her 27, myself (and I would imagine Alligator) wish them both happiness in their relationship. That is not what I honestly take to be the meaning of this thread (hopefully Alligator will return soon to this posting to elaborate this and bear me out).

What I stated in my previous posting (and forgive me if I am not being ‘politically correct’ in the way that I am doing this as I am a newbie to this forum) was that someone who is more sexually attracted to the very young looking Thai girls deserves to come under closer scrutiny than say someone dating a twenty plus year old. [ edited by Admin ]

I think that, certainly in the West, the dividing line is when you are sexually involved with a young person who is young enough to be your daughter (or son come to that).

When Iomuamart suggests the scenario of a 65 year old with a 19 year old then, yes, questions need and should be asked!

It would be a crying shame if Hua Hin was allowed to sink into the disgusting quagmire that many other towns in the Far East have slipped into.

As to Iomuamart’s comments that this is a serious and sensitive matter – yes I agree that it is potentially a very serious matter to the future of Hua Hin but, sensitive? Sensitive to who dare I ask?

My regards to all of you.

Yes all of you have good points. If a relationship is meaningful then age diference is irrelevant. My first first wife (from Iceland) was 17.5 years younger than me. I lost a lot of friends or maybe gained a lot of enemies.

When we got married I was 36 and she was 19. Walking down the street in Amsterdam and Paris posed a few problems but only with sick people who were not capable of forming a decent relationship with anybody for themselves.

My second wife who is Indian/Thai is twenty one years younger than me. We have a very good relationship. In her head she is twenty years older than me.

I am definitely not a pervert

When I see an old man with a young prositute then I think, yes what a sad person you are. People have to learn the diference between solid relationships and prositution. Here in Thailand in can be difficult.

Everything is relative and every instance needs scrutiny.

I agree that this thread should be closed or moved over to where it belongs. It started with an (incredulous) joke email.

Ha ha ha.
When i fist came to hua hin i noticed also many elderly guys with younger thai women (not underage kids sicko).
In patayya(bit of a hole) i noticed all the queers and younger guys. To each their own. I like gays really.

Now I say well done to them here especially if they have a decent girlfriend, wife.
Its nice to think too if i'm 65 and still interested in women that i maybe can have a quality 30 year old wife or girlfriend if she will have me and i have the guts.

The original frustrated ranter sounds like an over the top Jesus freak. He could go to patayya and see all the gays for a laugh. Maybe he is an in the closet queer or is badgered too much by his old wife or maybe he just needs sweet loving.
Nothing wrong with having an old wife if she's good and you still Love her after 30 years and are happy, in fact it would be wonderful really.
Some people think condoms are wrong too. Me, i think spreading aids is wrong.

Thai women don't look old as quick same westerners.
I've seen Thai woen in their late 30's that could pass as teenagers. Much thiner to like younger westerners.
Newbies do find it difficult to tell a thai's age group.
About after 40 Thai women seem to suddenly age very quickly.

All I can say to Alligator and his group after living here for the last 16 years is; next time you come to Thailand (if you do choose to do so), study the country's culture and history a bit before you do so. A few things may have escaped your observations or you may translate them incorrectly.
