Six killed after car plunges into canal in Ayutthaya

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

AYUTTHAYA: Six people were killed after a car they were travelling in skidded off a curving bridge, broke through the railing and plunged into a canal in Bang Pa-in district of this central province early Sunday, police said.

Pol Lt Col Pornnarin Pluangkrathok, an investigator of Phra-in Racha police station, said the accident occurred at about 3am while the car with six passengers - four men and two women - on board was crossing the bridge linking the western ring road and Phahon Yothin road in tambon Chiang Rai Noi.

All of the six passengers were killed. Three bodies were found lying on a road and the other three in the canal.
The four men were identified as Pakphum Seedokmai, 25, the driver, Saengsuree Boonkhum, 29, Peerapong Pothira, 24, and Tossawat Paisalkhan, 23, all from Muang district of Chaiyaphum province.

The two women were Suwisa Pradutchon, 31, of Surin's Lamduan district, and Rawiwan Lao-ngam, 20, of Saraburi's Nong Khae district.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Police believed the driver lost control of the car while it was running across the bridge at a high speed in the rain, causing it to break through the bridge railing and plunge into the canal.

Nine migrant workers die in fiery van crash
Nine labourers from Myanmar died on Sunday morning when the van carrying them smashed into a roadside tree and caught fire in Kamphaeng Phet.

Six others on board, including the Thai driver, were injured. Firefighters extinguished the fire engulfing the van on Paholyothin Road in Khlong Khlung district, only to find the nine people dead inside, huddled together in the front seats as if struggling to escape. Forensics specialists were gathering evidence at the scene and will interview the survivors to try and determine the cause of the accident.

Preliminary examination suggested the crash occurred in heavy rain either because the driver lost control on the slippery road surface or fell asleep behind the wheel.

Buses should be banned from midnight until dawn. How many times do we see this: bus departed at midnight, or similar? Or crashed before dawn?

Something is seriously wrong with these LPG conversions regardless if done illegally or legally. I don't trust any of them and if investigated I wouldn't be surprised to find all are faulty or substandard work to some degree. In my opinion they should be banned completely unless the vehicle comes out of the factory made as an LPG vehicle. Go back through these pages and see how many disasters and fires were because of exploding or leaking LPG systems. :guns: Pete

A passenger and driver had a lucky escape when their taxi burst into flames on a Bangkok road in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police were alerted of the fire in Pathumwan district at 2am.

Firefighters took 15 minutes to put out the blaze after it engulfed the entire taxi at Soi Ratchadamri 1 off Ratchadamri Road.

The driver, Sunthorn Kanyaboon, 50, said he saw flames leaping up from under the hood as he was driving over the Pratunam Bridge, so he sped off the bridge and parked to seek help.

Sunthorn complained his passenger had fled the scene without even bothering to pay the fare.

The taxi runs on LPG gas. Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

It is the same old crap as with everything else here, Pete. There are regulations in place that are ignored with LPG just as there is with everything else connected with driving / motoring. Inspections are just rubber stamped, or tea money paid. I suspect that the taxi may have been CNG(NGV) rather than LPG. It operates at a much higher pressure than LPG and requires better fittings and installation.

Most of the fires seen are connected with crashes / accidents. I have done about 100K Kms with my conversion without any problems. But I have fitted what is called an "inertia" switch that will close off the tank solenoid in the event of a crash. That is something that costs very little and should be fitted to all conversions. The petrol system has the same switch factory fitted to the electric fuel pump circuit.

I'm sure there's many private owners like you Nereus who are safety conscientious and proactive with the maintenance. I just don't trust any commercial operators.

The few times a year we have a group going up-country or to Bangkok, the hire van must be traditional diesel or petrol and 5 years old or less, no exceptions. I'm just too bloody old to get stressed out about people's safety here. Pete

I'm really amazed the woman survived. What we have here no doubt is cowboy Somsak, age 23, who has little training and no clue about centrifugal force when cornering or lane changing. Photos and video at link.

Another "accident" in the middle of the night. These things should really be banned from night trips.
