Tips to keep an inordinate amount of birds away from house

Post by Spitfire »

Anyone got some practicle ideas on this as it seems that there are many residents in my estate that think it's OK to leave a dog in their garden for 12 hours while they are at work, or whatever, whilst leaving overly large amounts of food for said fido to gorge itself on whilst the owners are out. The local birds of all description have figured out that there's free food everywhere and have started turning up in swathes and leaving piles of crap all over the walls, making nests in guttering etc, everywhere. It's not just me that's pissed off about it.

Needless to say the owners of the dogs don't care and lamely skirt the issue.

Unfortunately, I can't shoot or poison them so need to find another alternative of dealing with it in a less lethal nature.

Does anyone have, or know of, any solutions. Are there any electrical devices like with the dog sonic deterrent style thing that work with birds and are not too difficult to get your hands on?

Even the local disabled one-legged birds are starting to turn up for the dog food buffet on offer.

What kind of birds?

Sparrows, Mynas or the dreaded pigeon?

I am lazy, therefore I just copy my previous reply to similar question. I have scared away all manner of birds by plastic snakes and suspended hawk profiles. One has to change their positions every two weeks or so. Bids start to ignore the constantly immobile threats.
Here's the previous reply:
I had a continuous problem of birds crapping on the car in the car-port. I got rid of the birds by suspending a profile of a hawk from the car-port rafter. I downloaded a hawk picture from the net, made a flipped copy and printed both of them. Then I glued them on a piece of cardboard, cut the profile out and hung it above the car. No more birdies.

I'd hang a hawk profile wherever birds are of bother. On a guano-collecting balcony I'd place a couple of rubber snakes as well. Win The Avian War rather by propaganda than by guns.

When I had a rented house I used to enjoy throwing the remaining rice onto the patio and seeing the birds come in flocks. All creatures great and small 'n all that

Edit - gotta remember that that big concrete structure we call a home was probably where their great great great grandparents made a little nest in a tree. Then the humans came.....

What kind of birds?
Mainly sparrows and a slightly bigger one that's brown and white with a yellow streak on the beak but don't know their name to be honest........luckily no pigeons though FH.

Nice one Farang, thanks for re-posting that dude despite your ambivalence on the subject. :thumb:

GLC, the family tree of these vindictive birds is of limited interest to me, despite your fine words.

Good you don't have the pigeons, they seem to thrive when you are trying to wipe them out.
Plastic snakes should keep the sparrows at bay, especially if you can get them to move a little but the brown and white ones, which are almost definitely mynas, are much smarter and probably won't fall for the snake thing for long, in fact they usually alert us to snakes by mobbing them.

Here's a common myna

^ I hate those. They make a lot of noise, crap on everything, and spread the dry dog food all over the porch.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Yep FH, those are the offenders and are a nightmare like HHF says.

Any suggestions short of fireworks, poison and BB guns?

.... or you could employ some cheap labour to do this around your house like..... errmm.... all day.

You could make ya money back on it by selling tickets to buddies to come and enjoy the fun, you could even even award a prize 'n stuff for other deterrents for birds. Maybe a free Chang for the most 'creative' method.

It's probably not a practical solution and I don't know if it works for all kinds of birds, but back in England you can keep seagulls away from your property by, uh, hanging a dead one from the chimney!

Water will shift them, the bigger ones particularly. I have often thought about getting the bits and making one up like shown on the link. The pigeons at my Condo in Bangkok drive me insane! :cuss:
Not only their filthy crapping everywhere, but the incessant cooing right outside my office window. :guns:

I get sparrows, Mynahs, kingfishers, bee eaters, hoopaes, magpie robins and all sorts of other things in the garden since the cat elected to move to across the road. Had some nice turtle doves nesting for the last couple of seasons. Did you guys not have birds in your home countries? :? How did you deal with them? You could always try this.

SF,
Just set yourself up as a scarecrow. Wire a finger to the mains and any time a feathered friend upsets you, switch on and light up like a banshee.
That'll scare 'em but maybe not do your heart much good.

Perhaps you can treat the problem at source.
Open your neighbours gates and let the dogs run away!
No dog, no food......
Ye canny shove yer Grannie off a bus....
