E-books and e-book readers

Post by Bamboo Grove »

Does anybody have any experience on e-book readers? How comfortable are they compared to traditional books?

Me mam and sis came out and they both brought their Kindles with them. I have to say I was incredibly impressed with the thing. If I could afford one right now I would get one for sure.

I have an Android which I also use for ebook reading and have downloaded serveral Ebook/pdf readers which are excellent. Usually control of text and light is App-based on an Android tablet. Amazon has a Kindle App for Android which I use for browsing/buying Amazon ebooks.

An Android tab/iPad is not really a suitable alternative to an e-reader. It's fine if you already have a tab for other things and just want to occasionally use it as a reader, but the e-ink on proper e-readers is much easier on the eye and readable in pretty much all conditions. Plus the battery life is much, much longer.

Thanks all. I came across this Kindle as I was doing a search on books I need for my studies. Some of them said: available on Kindle and the price was very reasonable so maybe that's the one I should get.

I have had a kindle for over 18 months now and it is one of the best buys I have ever made. During the time I have had my Kindle I have only read one traditional book and could not wait to get back to reading on my Kindle. A friend described hers as her new best friend and I could not agree with her more

I like the smell of books, I know, I'm weird. :D Nothing like the musty pages of a good novel stimulating your senses as you read. Maybe Amazon will come out with a fragrance capsule you can attach.  Pete

I use Kindle on a notebook and I'll buy a Kindle reader as soon as I get the chance, you can only get them from Amazon and I don't have a useable address to get one delivered to here.
Actually I have no problem reading off the netbook but I would like the device for traveling and the price has got down below 100 Euro for some models now. Some of my coleagues have them and the quality seems very good considering the cost.
If you just need a couple of books for research though, you can download Kindle for PC for free off the Amazon site and read them on your computer.

I quite agree with you Pete but if you work away, books are too heavy and bulky to carry in anything like the quantity required.

Use the kindle for the last 12 months and I am very happy with it.

Use www.calibre.com for storing and formatting incoming books on my MacBook.

Can only recommend it.

I am actually searching for books for my coming exams and although the may, just may, have one copy of some of them in the university library, it means that I will have to wait for them and the time I get them may not be suitable for me to prepare for the exams. That's why I'm thinking of buying the books from Amazon- E-book reader would also make it much easier to read while travelling.

I bought a Sony reader a few years back and couldn't be happier with it.

Like Pete, I like books, but the convenience is so good I am a convert.

When I bought it Sony and the Kindle were the only real players. I just wanted a basic e-reader and Sony fit the bill price wise.

I've found a great number of free books on the web, I believe Sandman also uses a Sony and has sources.

Don't mean to hijack this, but its something I'm looking at for use when out of the UK and books are too bulky and heavy. Kindle is deemed the ultimate reader but is an amazon product. Is there a limit to what they supply? Or have they got the market covered on e-books? I ask as a couple of books I've picked recently aren't available on kindle.
