Passport and visa dates

Post by Huahinian »

A sharp reminder! I extended my visa for another year and witnessed somebody with a problem. He was trying to do the same but his passport expires in July 2013. Immigration refused to extend his visa beyond the expiry date of the passport. He was told to renew his passport and return but will need a new non-immigrant "O" to reapply for a yearly extension.

Make sure your passport does not expire before the requested expiry date of the visa extension.

Am I reading this right? Every time your passport expires, you need a new Non-Immigrant visa? Surely not.

Don't you have to return to your own country to get a new Non-Immigrant visa?

No BB. Sorry for the confusion. The gentleman in question was refused a visa extension because his passport is due to expire before a new yearly extension, so now has to obtain a new non-imm "O" visa to re-apply for his extension on the grounds of retirement.

Yes, I am confused. I'd have thought it was simply a case of transferring the visa into a new passport as opposed to having to get a new one. However, please excuse me - I am brand new at this game, and trying to learn.

BB - I do understand you are green (in every sense) and I am joking!

My understanding is that Immigration will not issue a visa (or extension) that expires AFTER the date the passport expires.

Yes, that is how I recently did it. It is normal and expected that Immigration will only give you an extension up until the expiry date of your passport. Either get a new passport before you apply for an extension, or take the shortened extension date and then get a new passport and have the visa transferred. :?

Me too, When I received the new passport the US embassy gave me a letter addressed to Thai Immigration asking politely if Imm would transfer the relevant info from old to new passport. Took both passports and the letter to HH Immigration, asked if it were possible to transfer the info. It was, they did.

Thanks guys. Although I will never say never, I have no intention of ever returning to the UK. I was thinking I might have to book a ticket for 9 years time :D . Transfer of visa is what I was expecting..... of course, TIT and anything could happen in the next 9 years :? .
