The Ovaltine Thread

Post by Pedro C »

Someone suggested we set up a separate thread for Ovaltine. Here goes!

I remember Ovaltine from my early childhood as a brown substance you added to warm milk.
It had a pleasant malty taste. My mother would serve it at bedtime when we had a cold, or in the early morning hours during cold winters, before paving our way through the snow to school.

I believe it was manufactured in Switzerland and quite hard to come by in the late and post-war period. We used to get it from the pharmacy. Later it gradually disappeared from the shelves in my home country.

When I moved to Thailand some years back I re-discovered Ovaltine. However, only to learn that the product had changed completely from what I recall from my childhood. It no longer has the distinct malty taste; it's more like a cocoa powder and if my memory serves me, should be dissolved in water rather than warm milk.

My questions to you Ovaltine connosseurs out there is:

Does your Ovaltine in Thailand taste the same as in your home country? Do you dissolve the powder in water or milk - hot or cold?? (or do you just stick to beer and/or G&T  )

:tosser:
Life is short. Especially for those of us who have most of our future behind us.

Ovaltine was readily available in the UK in the 50's - I'd don't remember it being bought from pharmacies - and it is still sold here.

But oh god awful stuff IMO! Now there did used to be a thick gooey malt stuff we had by the spoonful and I can't remember what it was called, but that was lovely and I wish I could still find it.

I think you'll find that you can still get 'original' Ovaltine in the UK, but they have increased their range to include the chocolate (and other) flavours. Thailand unfortunately only seems to sell the chocolate flavour.
