To be honest, I was glad that it was sorted quickly and got me on the road again. The tyre had less than 1000km on it at that time and I had visions of having to buy a new tyre. 200 baht seemed like a good deal then. They have to make money too and my car took up one of their ramps for a good half an hour while they did the repair.

Saying that, if I get a flat here in HH, I'll probably head to Bridgestone too now I know. :)

And where is this Bridgestone shop, if I may ask?

As you drive North out of Hua Hin, it's about a quarter mile before you get to B-Quick, on the left. There's a huge Bridgestone symbol on the roof.

You cannot compare prices without knowing just what they had to do to fix it, and just where on the tyre the damage was. Did they put in a simple pull-in plug on the tread part, a glued on patch, or did they have to vulcanise a patch on to the inside side wall?

A bit like going to the clinic to get a splinter removed: did they just pull it out, or did they have to close up the wound with stitches? :?

And, in addition, do you know enough about it to be able to say that the repair was done in a safe and proper manner?

It's part of a car, so I know very little. However, I had a problem, now I don't. Was the repair safe? - absolutely no idea.

This is why I have no option but to rely on 'reputable' dealers. TIT :?

I was quoted 4,800 baht per tyre (Bridgestone Turanza 195/55 R16) in a shop in Kanchanburi, 4,990 baht in Ratchaburi and 4,990 baht also at B-Quick. Then I went to Bridgestone (soi 54/1) and they quoted 3,650 baht. I had the guy double check that it was the same model and that it was indeed the price. Do you guys think there is a catch somewhere, like I may get older tyres or something? The price difference seems too good to be true.

You need to ask where the tyres are manufactured. The expensive Bridgestone Turanza is probably imported, where as the cheaper ones are made in Thailand, and from what I can find out have been unreliable. As always, you get what you pay for.

Resurrecting an old thread.

Yesterday after the heavy rains recently I noticed that my tyres had lots of dirt/mud on them, so rather than drive out and make a huge mess in our driveway, I decided to clean the tyres in situ and then just sweep up a relatively small area. During the process, I noticed a screw embedded in one of the tyres and sure enough on closer inspection I could see that the tyre was partially deflated. Fortunately I have a compressor so was able to quickly inflate and check that there was no sudden deflation, which there wasn’t, so this morning (after checking the inflation of the tyre) I drove to B-Quick on the way into Hua Hin. We showed one of the guys the problem and he said he could fix it and came back with a long plug (I’d guess about 10 cm long and with a special tool, inserted it into the hole. Now this is definitely not how they do them in the UK, but the man assured my wife it was a permanent fix. She asked how much and he said - no charge - I had already taken out 200 Baht from my wallet as a guesstimate and offered it to him, but he wouldn’t take it - eventually he took 100 Baht, and looked to be genuinely grateful.

Excellent service!!

You were lucky. I had a puncture last week, a screw at least 1.5 inches long. Cost in UK £15.

I've had several of those 'plug and glue' fixes over the years. They work fine and most of the time they can be fixed without taking the wheel off.
I'm sure I've had the same in the UK if my memory serves me, which often it doesn't.

You can buy kits to plug tyres yourself, it´s just a tool to rough up the edges and a sort of split needle that you use to force in the repair plug and some glue. I know it´s cheap enough to get it done in Thailand at a garage but they´re handy it you´re out in the sticks somewhere.

That’s exactly what he used, but on the basis it was free, (although I gave him 100 Baht), I think I’ll leave it to the experts, especially as you would need access to an airline to inflate the tyre.

As Nereus had indicated in his post back then, you need to know what the damage was. The sticky tyre plug is adequate for any small puncture in the tread area of a certain diameter; if it's in the sidewall you'll need you replace the tyre.
I do keep a kit in the car just in case but would rather visit a tyre shop to get it done.. Unless they will charge a farang fee - the kit cost me 80 baht including the tools. I won't patronise the shop of they want to charge me 500 baht for that.. and the inside hot patch repair will cause more damage than it is worth.
Think there is another thread on this somewhere??

Not sure about here but most new cars in the UK come with a repair kit in place of a spare wheel. Run-flat tyres are becoming the norm. The reason given by the manufacturers is cost and weight.
