In the light of the several unfortunate deaths of foriegners in Hua Hin this year, and following a meeting held about Tim/Gordon who died just over a week ago and didn't have any immediate family details for contact, it was decided that we should urge everybody to (where possible) register their presence in Thailand with their respective Embassy. The British Embassy offers this service free and online, and no doubt many other countries do too. The relevant web page for the British Embassy is https://www.britishembassy.gov.uk/servl ... 9131521963 and note that you have to subscribe to the website before proceeding with the registration.
Please could people of other nationalities post on this thread if it is possible to do this with their respective Embassies with the relevant details. Some will require your presence at the Embassy; fortunately for British citizens this is not the case. It will save family and friends unnecessary heartache in the event of some unfortunate accident.

Canadian registration
The Canadian embassy does urge anyone out of the country for more that 3 months to register. I will post a link later when I get home. I suppose you could register for shorter trips as well, just so they know where you are.

Registering with our respective Embassies is a good idea. The flipside of this for certain of us is that we may be hit for tax purposes depending on what the laws of your country is.
I am South African and when one registers with the S.A Embassy you do not have to give any info about your financial status. The number for the Embassy in Bangkok is 022538473......The email address for online registration is saembbkk@loxinfo.co.th

gaijin - that may well be true but in this instance most embassies want you to register and many make the process relatively easy. Registering will just make things easier in the event that someone has an unfortunate accident, and will help to avoid the frantic fumbling around by friends and/or family as has happened with some of the recently deceased expats. I do agree that on occasions the embassy staff can be snobby and apparently disinterested but if you have a genuine complaint then why not contact them? At the end of the day they are only civil servants/ employees so let their bosses know what you think. Again in this instance many will not even have to speak or deal with the embassy staff - they are just storing information in the unlikely event that it will be needed, but it will give peace of mind to many.
