The wife is panicking. There appears to be a massive amount of Thai communications on Facebook and other blogs that the MIB are now giving out very heavy fines (up to 1 million) and jail terms if people caught with pepper spray dispensers in their cars or possession. It seems that instead of a way for woman to protect themselves, they now see it as way of attacking other people and/or using them for other nefarious activities. Dumb F's, really over the top this one.
I see it as just another creative scheme to extract money from people. Any scuttlebutt on the radar in Hua Hin and elsewhere to confirm or deny this? Pete
PS: I think I'll simply prepare a spray bottle containing water and Thai chilies. Let's see them make that one illegal.

Not sure how factual this is, but if it is true, then yes, it's sure a money making racket. Besides, I wonder how many MIB have tins of it. Stun guns are illegal as well apparently, and yet I've personally seen MIB buying them at the Grand Market.
Ironically, I seriously doubt common crooks would even be willing to waste money on pepper spray when they can simply smash your head in with a piece or steel or an old piece of wood. Something just doesn't add up, but then again, TIT.

A couple years ago I inquired (perhaps on this forum?) where to buy pepper spray in Hua Hin, and I was told a place in the front of the main police station, so I went there looking for any vendor outside and when I didn't see one, went inside to inquire. I showed an officer the old pepper spray can I had and asked where I could buy some. He pulled me aside and quietly said to put that away and not let anybody there know I had it. So, I assumed from that episode that it was considered illegal here in Hua Hin.
However, later someone directed me to a vendor on the third floor of Market Village where several types of pepper sprays were openly on sale, so....?
I buy it for when I go on long beach walks at dawn, to fend off the occasional snarling dog(s). The only times (twice) that I've actually used it, the sound was enough to spook the dogs.
Actually carrying pepper spray is against the law in many European countries including the UK. It's banned by many countries that you would hardly describe as draconian although I'll admit that they're generally safer than Thailand.

I think they used to sell them in the "Tabac" bars in France, alongside a Lotto ticket and a pkt of Cigs. They probably still do. I knew someone who was given one as a security measure, the person used to carry a lot of cash after doing exhibitions. He kept it in his car for years and forgot about it....until he made a trip to the UK where UK customs found it in the door. The Police took his DNA etc. fined him and gave some sort of automatic black mark on his passport (I think) Apparently in the UK is is almost as bad as having a firearms. I think all European law for this type of thing should be the same in every country.

I don't believe that the laws in Thailand are draconian but sometimes the application of the law is.

And as we have seen, they can be used offensively as well as defensively and a pepper spray would be a great weapon for somebody intent on mugging an innocent pedestrian - quick burst to immobilise the victim, remove valuables and off all within a few seconds, still better than being shot I guess.

I spend most of my time in Thailand wearing a pair of shorts and a tee-shirt and I'm not sure I could be bothered to carry either item, purely from the sake of convenience. Surely I would look slightly crazy sat having my lunch at Had Sai Noi, or wherever, with an aerosol can in one hand and a six shooter in the other!

A six shooter might not be sufficient. I'd personally prefer a pistol with at least a 12 round capacity.
