Have you decided to leave Thailand and/or Hua Hin?
Re: Have you decided to leave Thailand and/or Hua Hin?
Re number 1 above. You only have to hand over money if you are driving illegally; no helmet or licence etc, probably the same or more lenient here than most Western countries where you lose your licence. if you are legal you don't pay.

That is totally incorrect, there are posts all over the forum from people who have had the same. Police stop people and blatantly demand money.

In the last 12 months I must have been stopped at least 24 times. I've always been legal, and never a hint of extortion.TakeitToTheMax wrote:That is totally incorrect, there are posts all over the forum from people who have had the same. Police stop people and blatantly demand money.
I think this is just another scare story like accidents are always the Farangs fault.
Anyway, this is a discussion for a different thread please.

I am 46 retired to thailand at 43,lived in pattaya and chumphon and now am in hua hin.Actually i am in khao kalok very near the beach.I am probably locked into thailand more for the fact that my own country australia is too expensive.Saying that i love it here,i bought a nice(not flash) inexpensive townhouse 500metres from a beautiful beach( its in my exwifes name with provisions to be left to my thai son),i can ride my mountain bike from here to sam roi yot and maybe see 10 cars on the road. Can swim in the sea shaded by a mountain.Am a member of springfield golf club and now pay no green fees(yearly maintenance)
my son goes to private kindergarten and my exwife lives 2 doors away, i drive a small nissan and never get hassled by the police,i can go to bangkok or pattaya for a "fun" week away,i cook mainly good quality western food and drink mainly at home watching the rugby.
My lifestyle costs me about 700 000 bht a year,so yes i am locked into thailand, because i wont get the same life at home.So i guess i can't leave thailand or would want to leave hua hin

So far 100 % of voters are going to leave Hua Hin!
Doh!
Doh!

Re: Have you decided to leave Thailand and/or Hua Hin?
but the poll only states how many people will leave thailand or hua hin,so it gives no guide or balance to how many are staying and why.Farang wrote:So far 100 % of voters are going to leave Hua Hin!

I probably would leave and live in my country if it hadn't priced me out, i guess that was my point of post,i get better value for my dollar here.

I agree, especially about the price of cars. Most new cars in Thailand cost about 1,000,000+ baht ($31,000+ US dollars), which I think is absolutely INSANE!TakeitToTheMax wrote:I must say that I most likely fall into the first category. It was not intentional but I went to visit a friend overseas and surprisingly liked it so much I have stayed on.
During my time away from Hua Hin I have contemplated much and I only express my opinion. Thailand has many many things going for it but also so many things against it.
1. I hate the corruption, getting stopped by traffic police and having to hand over money.
2. When purchased my home we had to bung the person in the land office money just to get the land papers
3. Hate the double pricing regime which even my own lady condoned as farangs have more money.
4. Things are not really so cheap, cars are damned expensive and houses are overpriced for what one gets, especially with the quality one gets.
5. Life seems to revolve far to much around bars and bar girls
6. hate the infidelity which seems to be accepted as normal by just about everyone in Thailand
7. hate that one cannot have an open discussion about the monarchy for fear of going to jail. My friend was jailed for this and just because a Thai woman he was seeing got angry with him and told the police he offended the king, he insists he didn't he is still in jail at 67.
8. Hate the fact I cannot sell my property as the market is flooded with new development.
9. hate that farangs cannot get finance for property or for business
10 hate that we are called farangs.
Ah well many more things but it really doesn't concern me to much now, I will still visit now and then but never live in HH or Thailand again.
Where am I know, the home of chewing gum, Belize Central America such a wonderful place.
A nice new and modern car in the U.S. can be purchased for almost half the price of what a new car costs here in Thailand.

I always find it amusing when people cite this as an argument as to why they dislike Thailand. There's plenty to do here. If your life ends up revolving around bars and bar girls then that's not the fault of the place your in. It's hardly rammed down your throat here in HH, is it?TakeitToTheMax wrote: 5. Re: Have you decided to leave Thailand and/or Hua Hin?
I met a couple this spring who were SO grateful for advice they were given on the forum. They had visited HH for 3-4 weeks every winter for years and had decided to retire here. The last year he worked he had a ton of untaken leave to take so they came for 8 weeks--they were originally planning to buy but rented. After 6weeks they were bored out of their minds and changed to a plan of him contiuing to work part-time and coming for 6 weeks each winter.

What's that song about accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative?
I suppose a thread asking why people are leaving a place is likely to do the opposite!
I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person in the area who has never been undeservedly fined for anything, rarely goes to Bintabaht, is very happily married to just one lady, isn't remotely bothered by people taking longer than usual at an ATM or driving the wrong way up the road, etc.
There's no point criticising someone who has acted on their convictions and left - they've come to a conclusion and acted on it. Good luck to them. What gets my goat are those with the option of leaving who choose not to do so and spend their entire lives whingeing.

Re: Have you decided to leave Thailand and/or Hua Hin?
I made my choice, Hua Hin/Thailand was not the place for me permanently, had a good time when I was in HH and still enjoy visiting now and then, some good friends here.
Oh I forgot the immigration farce of Thailand; how could one not enjoy that. Belize obtain a 30 day visa, extend to one year, deposit cash in bank, get permanent residence and passport. No restrictions on owning land or property in ones own name.
Recently bought a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 for Thb 1.4m on the road including 1 years insurance, hmmm could get a Toyota Camry here for that. Bliss

Re: Have you decided to leave Thailand and/or Hua Hin?
Leaving after 12 years in Thailand. But will be making yearly trips back to Hua Hin with the Thai wife.
Never bought any property in Thailand, the Farang types of ownerships, and all the BS problems that go with it. Everyone of my friends had problems with Thai way of ownership in one form or another.
Cleaner beaches in USA where I'm heading.
Of course will miss the massage girls.
But for friends and family and particularly the quality of friends going back home is the best for me.
