do the legal thing, an IDL must be obtained overseas before arriving in Thailand,
yes people will say b## shit the police but if u have bang what are u going to do then, Apply for an Internationale license before traveling then if staying extended in Thailand apply for a Thai License, Do the right thing and no problems

Cops like to see the IDL, they know what it is and they won't bung you up for not having it. People without it make for the quickest, easiest ticket for them to hand out.
Last time I was pulled over he also pulled over 4 or 5 bikes behind me. I got out the IDL, he took it and showed it to the other people who did not have it. The cop flashed a huge smile because he knew he had 4/5 guaranteed legal violations and a nice little payday. He thanked me profusely and sent me on my way, no doubt for giving him a dispute-free reason.

Here in the states it's very easy to get. Go to a AAA branch and in 20 minutes you have one for around 15$

In the UK you can get an AA international driving license from the larger Post Offices, they last for 1year.

So is it also true that I need an IDL just to ride my hired mo-ped for a week when I come over in September, this is my 4th visit and I've never bothered before, but mind you my one and only brush with MIB was when I was pillion and my pal who had enjoyed a few drinks before we headed out and was driving got pulled over and he got breathalysed.Upshot was the 15kb they were looking for got knocked down to whatever he had in his pocket and a 1k from me to supplement it ! a good result I might add.Though I've never DUI in blighty so I wont do it in LOS either. So won'y my brit driving license get me through driving a moped then ?

Yes!
The police stops are becoming more frequent and if you don't have the international licence you will get busted.
As mentioned by Ricardo; very easy to obtain though the U.K. post offices.

No such thing as an International Driving Licence it's a 'Permit' that is supposed to accompany your overseas licence although it is mistakenly used and recognised as being a 'licence'.
You should carry your non-Thai full driving licence as well as the IDP.

Not only do you need both your driving licence and IDL, they should both show that you are entitled to drive a moped.

So, for those of us who have Thai drivers licenses, where can we get an International Drivers Permit/Endorsement?

If your using your Thai drivers license to get an IDL you have to go to the "Head Office" of Land and Transport. This is almost directly across the street form Chatuchak Market next to the Civil Aviation Training Centre, located between Mo Chit and Saphan Khwai BTS station in Bangkok. IDL are not issued in Hua Hin or Phan Buri.

Head office
1032 Phaholyothin Road
Lardyao, Chatuchak district.
tel: 02-272-5322, 02-272-5493.
