Work opportunities

Post by Tnzu81 »

Hello people,

This is my first time in this region (south east asia), originally I'm from Amsterdam, Holland, but since a few months I've been living and working in Dhaka, Bangladesh as expat.

Honestly speaking Bangladesh is an interesting place to live and work, but due to several reasons it's not really that nice unfortunately...

Now spending just a few days near Hua-Hin gives me so much energy (staying quite far, near Pran Buri). So I'm just curious if there are any ICT or design opportunities in this region for a westerner like me.

All remarks and ideas are welcome.

Pretty much, no.

For ICT you'll probably need to be working in Bangkok and looking at coming down to Hua Hin for the weekend, providing the position doesn't require you to work 6 days a week - as most jobs in the sector seemed to be demanding when I was looking a couple of years ago.

I hope you wouldn't be expecting 'expat' salaries either. Depending on your experience you would probably be looking at 30-60,000bt per month.

I know one person (programmer) here who does it remotely out of his home for a U.S. (I think) company and another person who works in the IT department of a big Bangkok hospital 5 days a week and maintains a home in Hua Hin for weekends and holidays, so it's possible, but probably difficult.

You will also need a work permit which any local company would have to sponsor/provide for you unless you worked remotely off book and kept it quiet.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Working remotely is of course an option if you have a very understanding boss, or you can sell it as an advantage to your employer (for example if you need to provide out-of-hours technical support, you can cover the graveyard shift so your colleages don't have to get out of bed in the middle of the night), and certianly the best way to work in the IT industry whilst living in Thailand.

Other than that, if you really want to live here and you're prepared to think about the long term rather than "I need to get here right now" approach, you could always try building up a one-man business that can be run remotely. Your own software development, web design, SEO etc company.

Thank you for the replies. I didn't check it in a while and I'm already back in Dhaka for over a month now.

Maybe my Bangladesh adventure is going to end soon, and I just don't like the idea of living back in Europe again. Not because I don't like it back home, but I really love the idea of living in other countries. You learn so much if you mingle with the local population and go beyond the expat clubs and touristy places. The things I've learned about Bangladesh for example would be shocking news to many people. Nothing is as simple as it seems.

I would love to have a similar experience in a south-east Asian country, but maybe it will prove too difficult.
