CHUMPHON – A jealous jilted lover has been charged with murdering his former girlfriend in a coffee booth at a Tesco shopping centre in front of hundreds of witnesses.

Boonlert Ladlon was arrested and charged with firing the shotgun blast that hit Piyakorn Homlarp, 34, an employee at a coffee booth on the ground floor of the Tesco mall, on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

She was severely wounded and rushed to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police said initial inquiries pointed to the shooter being one of her former boyfriends.

Police compared photos of three men with images caught on the store’s CCTV system, which showed a man running out of the shopping complex and fleeing on a motorcycle. There was a clear picture of the licence plate.

The suspect was identified as Boonlert Ladlon.

Pol Lt Col Panintorn Choti, deputy superintendent of Muang Chumphon police station, said Thursday morning that police arrested Mr Boonlert on Wednesday night when he was riding a motorbike and still wearing the same clothing.

He said the man confessed to killing his former girlfriend. He said he had broken off with Piyakorn after she broke her promise to not date a new boyfriend for a while.

Just a few days after making the promise, he saw her out with another man, so he decided to kill her in revenge.

He said he had thrown the gun into a canal. Police said they had not found it yet.

Mr Boonlert was charged with first degree murder.

Comment - Wow! There are some deranged people around these days on 'hair trigger' settings. I mean, fly into a jealous rage, grab a shotgun, scoot down Tesco, start letting of rounds in a tantrum at a girl in a coffee shop and then fleeing as if you are going to get away with it.

And we had a thread a couple of days ago with some sanctimonious women's association leader warning younger Thai women to stay away from foreigners........yeah right, stick with the local guys.

Never said there weren't crazy foreigners around.....true enough too.

This thread example might be an extreme example but if you read the news reports a bit, and after you live here for a good long time, then the amount of unnecessary very violent crimes committed here for literally no reason other than some guy getting angry, business dispute, alcohol/drug related or simply due to unbelievable negligence or 'loss of face' is just staggering. I suppose what made me post it as a thread was the fact that he couldn't give two hoots that where he decided to 'go get her' was in the middle of a Tesco and the obvious utter contempt he had for anything at all when it came down to it. And from my experience here after a long time I often sense and feel that same level of disregard in many that I see and meet, it's just that they haven't lost enough face yet in a situation to push them over into the abyss.

And these are just the cases that we hear about.............try living in the average 'hicks ville' village or small town and there are just some shockers that never really even register.

I remember when I lived in a rural northeast setting for two years and there were constant reports of karaoke bars being shot up, police raiding whole villages for narcotics, guy gets drunk and has disagreement with life-long friend and kills him on the spot to shut him up, neighbor rapes 14 year old girl when her parents go out, college kids firing guns at each other over girls, guys dies in car having done a drunk 'Spanky Spangler' style exit from a road corner into a rice field with his wife and kid in the car......etc etc.

Maybe it's a mentality that has arisen here as most know that if they do something then come clean to the cops, do the re-enactment to make the cops look good, show some remorse at the temple, compensate the victims family and they are then barely punished. I suppose the precedent is set by the high profile cases of descendents of the rich and what happens in the newspaper stories and on TV.

A lot of people are really out-of-control and very 'hot' inside. This is merely a thread that might provoke a small slice of meaningful comment or opinion....nothing more. And yes, there is bad crime in all countries but what is sometimes perplexing here are the reasons given for such violence.....or the lack thereof reason.

However, having said all that, don't want to sound too negative and there are many positive things to mention about living here too which why we are all here still. Just highlighting a crime topic and this topic does affect us all in many ways and those that are savvy enough to be aware of it and have contemplated the subject are in a better position thatnthose who simply walk around in Lala Land.
