Cha-Am kite festival March 8th & 9th

Post by Frank Hovis »

I was in Cha-Am this evening and saw a poster for the Cha-Am Kite Festival, running on the 8th and 9th of March.

I think it's on the beach, there was a large poster on the road to the beach but I didn't have a camera.

The last one I went to was at the Army Camp on Petchkasem, a few years ago, and it was good day out.

I found this on the net:
Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in cooperation with Phetchaburi province, Naresuan Camp, The Rama VI Camp (or Phra Ram VI Camp) the Thai Sports World under Royal Patronage, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Thailand Kite Fliers Association. With each subsequent year, the Thailand International Kite Festival attracts an ever-growing number of devoted kite fans, participants and spectators, from all over Thailand as well as from countries around the region, and beyond. The colorful kite festival thus presents a golden opportunity for visitors to savor the international flavor of kite culture in a single trip. As well as kite events there will also be a parachute show, a radio controlled airplane show and competition. As with any Thai festival there will be plenty of food and handicraft booths everywhere to keep you occupied as well. This annual event is really one not to be missed and definitely one of the more colorful events of the year.

Now I'm confused.

The video says it's at the beach, the video shows it's at the Army camp but that might have been last year, then there's the shots of kites over the beach but the text BB posted says it's at the Army camp.

I suppose if it's at the Army camp it will be noticeable driving up Petchkasem, if there are no kites there it must be at Cha-Am beach. :?

 I was assuming Naresuan Camp, The Rama VI Camp (or Phra Ram VI Camp) was on the beach

Next question then, where is Naresuan Camp, The Rama VI Camp (or Phra Ram VI Camp) please? I was thinking of popping up if I had nothing else on.

It's on the beach side of Petchkasem about a third of the way between Hua Hin and Cha-Am.

They do have a beach, a very nice beach in fact because they've built a lot of breaks to catch the sand that should go to Hua Hin, but the kite flying was done on the grass airfield.

There has just been, or will be, some other big show on the beach at Cha Am. It was posted on here, but I cannot find it.

Does anybody have any more information on this festival please? I've been able to establish that flying will be from 10am until 8pm. However the venue is still unclear.

I drove back from just North of Cha-Am this afternoon. The only sign I saw all the way home was on the corner of the road in Cha-Am just before the traffic lights. All that said was 'Cha-Am Kite Festival'. I guess that this is going to be another of life's mysteries, and we'll have to look to the skies on the day to see where it's happening :?

This from TAT.
http://www.tatnews.org/sea-sun-fun-flyi ... ival-2014/

Doesn't really clear it up as the photos are all from the Army camp but there is mention of
Over the course of the two-day event, the streets of Cha-Am will be adorned with colourful decorations and there will be lots of exciting activities to enjoy as well as plenty of food and handicraft stalls for when visitors feel like a snack.
The Army camp is nowhere near the streets of Cha-Am.

And to confuse the situation more, I've just found this one:

I think I'll ask Mrs BB to phone the More Information number tomorrow.

Not a lot of help but the Cha Am Today free newspaper says ' North Cha Am Beach'.

Well that should rule out the Army camp as if it was to be described as any part of Cha-Am beach it would be South Cha-Am beach.
