Exchange Rates

Post by cavkc »

Changed money at LHR on departure and received 65 baht to £1 and paid £13 in commission to Travelex. I later changed money at a local bank in HH and received 70 baht with NO commission. Almost a 10% variance.

Needless to say I WON'T be using Travelex ever again.

You have been warned.

A number of years ago, I was going back to the UK. I was really on my uppers. Had barely enough money for the bus to BKK, taxi to the airport, departure tax etc. I then had to get from Heathrow to Lincolnshire under my own steam.
A three hour wait at BKK and 5 hours in Kuwait. The place was dry as well.
I thought I'd worked it all out correctly until I exchanged my Baht for pounds at Travelex, Heathrow. I'd forgotten about their commission!!
Definitely not enough to get back to Lincs. Fortunately my brother was there to meet me - only a 50% chance of that before due to his work.
Never , ever again will I travel and have no immediate recourse to funds when I arrive.
So, yes, Travelex could have had me walking and hitchiking for 100 miles :thumb:

Golden Rule:

Always change money here, thai airport exchange rates are fine. Anywhere in the UK seems to give you sweet FA.
