Saint George's Day 2014

A Happy St George’s Day to all our English Forum Members.

Anyway, to start this off on a positive note, The Ham & Bacon Company will be making Saint George’s Pie today. This is a steak filled pie with onions, a little carrot and celery, flavoured with thyme and a sauce made from a fine English Ale called Hen’s Tooth and our own beef stock. The crust will be a short crust base with a hint of English Mustard Powder added to the flour seasoning and a flaky rough puff pastry top.

The Saint George’s Pie will be available hot from the oven from 10.00am and will be free to all paying customers tomorrow 23rd April 2014.

We did something similar to this a few years back now, we think it is time to revive the tradition. As we said then, William Shakespeare had Henry V rouse his troops into battle with a shout of Cry ‘God for Harry, England, and Saint George!’ and while we’re not suggesting anything quite so dramatic, we're willing to help celebrate this truly English day.

All pies will be hot straight from the oven for you to eat at your convenience.

Reckon anyone who turns up with a slain dragon should get 2 pies and a fair, virtuous, maiden?

Splendid idea. I think in view of my 'signature' I should have 2 pies and a bottle of ale, delivered to my portcullis at noon...
This is the way

He wasn't very English though was he?

St George was a Roman soldier during the Third Century AD, when the Emperor Diocletian was in power. It is said that he once lived in al-Khadr near Bethlehem, on land owned by his mother's family.

While the saint's father is usually traced back to Cappadocia, an area in modern Turkey, it is believed his mother was Palestinian from Lydda - now Lod, in Israel.

Yes, it's the sort of jingoistic nonsense best left to the likes of skirt wearing heathens to the north.

I know Siani. I just posted it for info. At the end of the day, what is the definition of an Englishman or for that matter any other person in another country?. We are all global nomads

That's pretty much how I feel about it, nationality seems to be an increasingly anachronistic concept, it's no more than an accident of birth after all.

As a jocular aside.......... I am a Yorkshireman but could actually be half Lancastrian as I was born close to the border. I may have been conceived astride the border in which case which half of me is Yorkshire and which half is Lancashire?

No rude responses please and :offtopic:
