My MIL's passport expires Sept 2015 and I think the time was 6 months so she would need to leave my March 2015

For you to travel to another country yes, you are correct. But isn`t your MIL with you in the USA, and isn`t she Thai? If she is returning to her own country I doubt very much it would be a problem.
