Car Hire

Post by ITKMAN »

Seems there is a bit of confusion on car hire as to the DL requirement. I read often that a home lis (not thai) stand alone is not legal for driving.
What is correct?
"There are a number of reliable car rental and car hire agents in Hua Hin. They have a full range of cars for rent and cars for hire including some of the latest models. Hua Hin car hire companies can offer you full insurance for your rental car. See Hua Hin and the surrounding areas in style with a rental car, why bother with a Hua Hin taxi? Hiring a car in Hua Hin is an easy process, all you need is your drivers license either international or from your own country. "

Tis the above correct?

Many places in Thailand do not insist on an International Driving permit when you hire a vehicle. It is however, officially, a requirement (refer to the link below).

There may be no problem, if you do not have an accident. If, however, you do have an accident, you may find that your insurance or your travel insurance (including medical costs) refuse to cover you.

We also all know how the Thai MIB like getting a few baht for nothing!

Please consider - and read the link from the AA below

Hi

International Driving permit only cost £5.40 in UK and you can get it there and then from the post office, they are a agent for the AA

Yes the people HHAD car hire links are good and have good car and a very helpful.

Cost is not bad, and if you not have accident you get you insurance money back.

I can say yes if you want to go up or down the coast, having your own car make it more fun, you not have to try and make the taxi stop, u stop when you want

Hire one and have fun

Our understanding is that you must have a driving licence showing a photograph of yourself, so most uk licence holders are ok. However we agree that as the police in thailand like to make themselves look imp by checking everything they can, an international licence can be of benifit. We also recomend that you carry a copy of your passport with you, if you give up the original you usually have to buy it back and it can be a protracted process. Clive

Hi -

According to the Thai Business legal site:-
An international driver's license is accepted in Thailand as long as its valid normally 3 months. A foreign license holds no weight here. If you decide to stay in Thailand you should obtain a Thai license. Some Insurance companies will put in fine print in Thai that you must be the holder of a CURRENT DRIVERS LICENSE which means a THAI DRIVERS' LICENSE not an international to claim insurance if you have an accident. To obtain an International license you must take documents to the Vehicle Registration Division of the Communication Transport Agency (opposite Chatuchak Park), Poholythin Rd, Bangkok, Tel: (02) 272-3615. Application can also be made at the Vehicle Registration Office in Chiang Mai located on Chiangmai-Hangdong Rd. tel (053) 270-411 as well as other registered Centres. Allow one month for issuance & mail delivery from Bangkok.
It is my understanding that Thailand has signed up to various international regulations that require an IDP or Thai licence only.

I think that the bit about:
Some Insurance companies will put in fine print in Thai that you must be the holder of a CURRENT DRIVERS LICENSE which means a THAI DRIVERS' LICENSE not an international to claim insurance if you have an accident.

is worth noting. (beware of this one)

It is also a possibility that, without an IDP, your travel / health insurance may find a way of rejecting any claim should you be injured.
It really is not worth taking the risk - to save a paltry amount....
Cheers

Below is the text taken from the Budget Rent a Car Thailand site which confirms that they understand the rules in the same way that I do. Clive.

Drivers License
All drivers must hold a current, non-probationary license. The license may either be Thai, or from a renter's country of residence (with an English translation) or an international drivers permit. Licenses (and a valid passport) must be carried at all times when driving.
